In 1917 an engineering graduate by the name of Jacques Bally bought the Lajus Plantation on the island of Martinique. It is reported that he built his initial column still. I’ve covered a few brands and rums from Madeira but not William Hinton. Which was a bit of a surprise when I came to review this particular rum.

I honestly thought I had reviewed at least one William Hinton rum! Anyway, lets give you a little bit of information on the William Hinton brand. Despite only recently coming to more global attention – perhaps due to the general rise in interest in Agricole Rhum, rum was been produced on Madeira for hundreds of years. Rhum Depaz Rhum Vieux Agricole Plantation Rum review by the fat rum pirateRhum Depaz Rhum Vieux Agricole Plantation. Rhum Depaz are a rum brand and distillery from the French speaking island of Martinique. As a result most (but not all) of their rhums follow the AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controlee) Martinique.

The Duchess Martinique 15 Years Old Rum

The Duchess Martinique 15 Years Old Rum. For 2020,The Duchess Martinique 15 Years Old Rum Review by the fat rum pirate Independent Bottler The Duchess have begun a line of Hummingbird inspired r(h)ums, with artwork, as always from Dutch artist Hans Dillesse.

There has been a little bit of confusion surrounding this rhum. It has been suggested in some parts of the internet that it is a rhum from boutique producer A1710 based at the Habitation du Simon nearby. This rhum is very definitely from the Rhumerie du Simon. Rhum Clement L’Elixir XO

Rhum Clement L'Elixir XO Rum Rhum Review by the fat rum pirateRhum Clement L’Elixir XO. Rhum Clement are one of the pioneers of Rhum Agricole on Martinique, alongside Rhum J.M they are perhaps the most well known producers on the island.

This Clement L’Elixir XO is a blend of rhums aged for a minimum of 6 years. I cannot find any information which details the oldest rhum in this blend. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Rhum J.M Millesime 2003

Rhum J.M are an Agricole Rhum producer from Macouba on the French speaking Caribbean island of Martinique.

Located in northern Martinique at the foot of Mount Pelée.Habitation Bellevue produces sugarcane which is grown up the face of a volcano.

The Housing Bellevue, located on the flanks of Mount Pelee, with rich volcanic soil, allows the sugar cane used exclusively by Rhum J.M. to have unique flavour.  Agricole Rhum producers are very keen on using marketing terms such as “terroir” when describing their rums.  This is because Agricole in the main, is produced on only a few small islands so it doesn’t have quite as much obvious or immediate diversity as the molasses rum world.
