Tilambic 151 Overpoof Aged Rum. The world of Overproof rum is quite an interesting one. Bottlers producing rum, which you are then advised not to take neat, as it may be hazardous to your health.
The most famous examples of Overproof 151 (75.5% ABV) rum are Bacardi 151 and Lemon Hart Demerara. Whilst Bacardi 151 seems to be most common in American frathouses – Lemon Hart has built up quite a following amongst Tiki bartenders who use the rum sparingly, as a float in drinks such as Zombies.
S.B.S The 1423 Single Barrel Selection Denmark 2014. As 1423 are based in Denmark it is perhaps unsurprising to see a rum from Denmark being bottled by them.
Whilst Denmark might not be the most obvious place to find rum being distilled, the rum scene in Denmark is booming. Bottlers such as Compagnie des Indes often release rums solely for the Danish market – often at Cask Strength. There are a number of notable rum enthusiasts hailing from Denmark – Ingvar Thomsen, Johnny Drejer and of course Mads Heitmann of Romhatten.com.
The Duchess Rum Guadeloupe Aged 19 Years. Hailing from the Netherlands The Duchess are gaining a bit of a reputation amongst Rum Enthusiasts for their bottlings.
I was recently fortunate enough to interview Nils Van Rijn about The Duchess and the rum world in general. I wanted to interview Nils because I had sampled some of his rums and (without wanting to pre-empt this review) been very impressed.
Velho Pescador Extra Premium Cachaca Aged 5 Years. Velho Pescador is actually a Weber Haus product. I was unaware of this. As a result of this my sample has remained untouched for a couple of months – as I had so many to try. I had not heard or seen of Velho Pescador before. My bad!
Weber Haus are quite a big deal in the Cachaca world and they are one of the producers trying to gain a foot hold in Europe. With my friend Leszek Wedzicha acting as their Brand Ambassador I am sure this will not take long!
Rhum Depaz Rhum Hors D’Age Agricole XO. Or we could call it the Grande Reserve XO. Either way this is one of the top rums in the Depaz range. Rhum Depaz hail from the French Island of Martinique. Rhum Depaz produce their agricole rhum in line with the AOC Martinique guidelines. So its “full on” agricole rhum if you like.
J. Gow Fading Light Something is happening up in Scotland – besides the casual attitude towards cardiac arrest and the terrible football. Over the past 2 to 3 years a number of rum brands and distilleries have burst out of that part of the world. Think Dark Matter, Sugar House and Wester.
Berry Bros & Rudd Hampden 17 Year Old TWB Exclusive Cask #27. The Whisky Barrel (TWB) certainly seem to like their Hampden rums! This is the one of their latest and one of two rums available that were bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd.
This particular bottling is a single cask (cask #27). It was distilled way back in 2000 and bottled in 2018. It is noted as being 17 Years Old. The rum is 100% Pot Still. As the rum is from 2000 then it is believed to be a Diamond H marque (I can’t use the arrow keys on WordPress documents as it goes a bit crazy). So the ester count on this one is fairly “low” 200-400 g/hlaa on the scale. it is bottled at 57.2% ABV. Which will either be Cask Strength or very close to it. When this went to retail only 194 bottles were available. I am unsure of the percentage of Continental (European) and Tropical ageing but I assume the vast majority of this rums life was spent in Europe.
