S.B.S – The 1423 Single Barrel Selection Mauritius 2010 The Whisky Exchange Exclusive.
As the title suggests UK retailer The Whisky Exchange have teamed up with Denmark’s 1423 World Class Spirits. For this release we have a Single Barrel rum from Grays Distillery, Mauritius.
Grays Distillery have a number of brands available both domestically and worldwide. They produce the New Grove and Lazy Dodo rum ranges.
Rum & Cane Merchants Mauritius XO Single Cask. I’ve covered a bottling from Rum & Cane Merchants previously. If memory serves me correctly that was an offering from Worthy Park Distillery in Jamaica.
The brand seem to cross over between being called West Indies Rum & Cane Merchants and just Rum & Cane Merchants. I fancy with all the cultural appropriation backlash, they may be looking to phase out the West Indies part in time. The brand is based in London but the parent group Crucial Drinks are based in Scotland. So not very West Indian in terms of location certainly.
The Equiano Rum Co Afro-Caribbean Rum. I first came across this rum at the Boutique Rumfest in London. For those not familiar with London Rumfest, on a Friday afternoon they open up what they call the Boutique Rumfest.
This Rumfest is open to the trade and journalists, bloggers etc. It allows new brands to showcase and promote their rums to an audience in a less hectic manner than is usually the case on Saturday and Sunday. It’s really an ideal time to make contacts and speak with people who may be able to help smaller brands.
Spice Hunter Boldest Spiced Rum. I’ve seen spiced rum described in many different ways but I’ve never heard anyone claim their spiced rum is the boldest before.
Not many spiced rums claim to add 13 different spices to the rum. Which is why as their website informs us – they have decided to call it “Boldest Spiced Rum”. They think it is a very bold move to infuse so many spiced into their rum.
S.B.S. – The 1423 Single Barrel Selection Mauritius 2008. 1423 have been releasing a varied selection of single cask rums over the past couple of years. They haven’t stuck rigidly to the likes of Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados.
We have featured a few rums from Mauritius over the past few years. Most of those have been from the Medine Distillery. This particular bottling, is however from another distillery on the island.
That Boutique-y Rum Company Labourdonnais Distiilery Mauritius. Here we have a 5 year old from the wonderfully named Labourdonnais Distillery on the island of Mauritius. Pronounced Labour-don-nais, so I am told. I can’t actually find a translation for what it might mean, so we’ll move on from this lesson in French and talk rum again.
Tilambic 151 Overpoof Aged Rum. The world of Overproof rum is quite an interesting one. Bottlers producing rum, which you are then advised not to take neat, as it may be hazardous to your health.
The most famous examples of Overproof 151 (75.5% ABV) rum are Bacardi 151 and Lemon Hart Demerara. Whilst Bacardi 151 seems to be most common in American frathouses – Lemon Hart has built up quite a following amongst Tiki bartenders who use the rum sparingly, as a float in drinks such as Zombies.
