Kill Devil Guatemala – Darsa Distillery Aged 8 Years

Kill Devil Guatemala 8 years rum review by the fat rum pirateKill Devil is an old fashioned term for rum but this is a very new rum brand.  Coming from independent whisky bottler Hunter-Laing.  I came across these distinctive bottlings for the first time on a German website 4finespirits.  I was interested in trying them but importing spirits into the UK can be a bit of minefield (the German’s also have a different rate of VAT which further complicates things) so I passed over buying them straight away. St Lucia Distillers – Tour the North – Newcastle Upon Tyne

Chairman's Reserve St Lucia Distillers the fat rum pirateFate is a funny thing and certainly not something anyone should take for granted.  As a rum blogger (I hate that term) based in the North East of England rum “events” don’t come along very often.

I had originally planned to make my first public appearance as “thefatrumpirate” back in October 2015 at the London Rumfest.  However the news that I was to become a father meant such shenanigans were put on hold. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Foursquare Rum Distillery Zinfandel Cask Blend

Foursquare zinfandel cask blend rum review by the fat rum pirateFoursquare Rum Distillery St Philip, Barbados.  For many people Barbados is the birthplace of rum.  Which is handy because in the Richard Seale Foursquare have one of the most vocal rum producers.

Passionately against additives and very much against the more secretive side of the rum world Richard is currently involved with Luca Gargano of Velier in educating and trying to push through new classifications of rum. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Koko Kanu

Koko Kanu rum review by the fat rum pirateHailing from Jamaica comes Koko Kanu.  Which is a first on this site as its a flavoured, rather than a “Spiced” rum.  Distilled by J Wray and Nephew it certainly should have a solid rum at the heart of it.

In the UK Malibu is without doubt the most popular Coconut “rum” but at only 21% it falls massively short of what can be labelled a rum.  In reality it is little more than a Coconut and rum liqueur.  Like Koko Kanu it also has a decent base rum as it is produced at West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD) home of Cockspur Rum.  The Malibu brand (12 flavours now available worldwide) is owned by Pernod Ricard. Don Q Gran Anejo

Don Q Gran Anejo rum review by the fat rum pirateDon Q Gran Anejo is a top of the range sipping rum from Puerto Rican domestic powerhouse Serralles.

The Gran Anejo is a blend of rums aged up to 12 years from Serralles aged stocks.  It is noted (unsurprisingly) that these are amongst their “finest” aged stocks.

Puerto Rico is perhaps best known for being one of Bacardi Internationals rum producing nations.  Their flagship rum Bacardi Superior is produced there.  However the Serralles family have been producing rum on the island since 1865. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
