That Boutique-y Rum Company C.A.C.D Venezuela

That Boutique-y Rum Company C.A.C.D Venezuela rum review by the fat rum pirateThat Boutique-y Rum Company C.A.C.D Venezuela. This South American country is perhaps not the first location you might conjure up when thinking about rum producing countries but there is little doubt that it shifts a fair amount of the noble spirit.

Brands such as Pampero, Cacique and Santa Teresa have long been staples in many bars the world over. As I was beginning my Rum Journey early in the last decade it was frequently noted that Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, was the “best” or one of the best rums in the world. Whilst that opinion may have shifted in more serious rum circles it is still a very high selling brand. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Kill Devil Guyana Aged 12 Years

Kill Devil Guyana 12 Year Old Rum Review by the Fat Rum PirateKill Devil Guyana Aged 12 Years.  Kill Devil are a range of rums bottled by Whisky bottler Hunter-Laing.  I’ve covered them quite extensively on the site so far.

They are now bottling rums at Cask Strength.  The Kill Devil range now have rums with Red labels like these – to demonstrate Cask Strength.  Everything else presentation wise is exactly as before. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Duncan Taylor Uitvlugt 1998 Single Cask Rum

Duncan Duncan Taylor Rum Guyana Uitvlugt review by the fat rum pirateTaylor are an Independent bottler of whisky and rum from Scotland.  This is a Uitvlugt Demerara rum.  Uitvlugt is the name of a now defunct distillery. Some of the stills from this distillery are now housed at Demerara Distillers Limited or the Diamond Distillery if you prefer.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to determine the exact origin of all the Independently bottled Demerara/Guyana rums.  Not only are bottlers using non-standard terms. Some are using the old Distillery names, some the stills and others are just stating Diamond Distillery. There is also an issue with where the stills on which these rums were at the time of bottling. This is particularly confusing the older the rums are. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Kill Devil Jamaica 24 Year Old

Kill Devil Hampden Jamaica 24 year old cask strength rum review by the fat rum pirateScotch Whisky bottler Hunter Laing and Co Ltd, released their range of Kill Devil rums early in 2016.  Not so hidden amongst the interest were a number of comments on the strength of the rums.

All the rums released initially were bottled at 46% ABV.  This disappointed quite a few rum connoisseur’s who had hoped to see Cask Strength releases. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

The World of Independent Bottlings

imageThe rum world is a confusing one.  When you first get into rum or begin a “Rum Journey” as many say, the rum world is very confusing.

After trying a few different styles/brands you’ll start digging around stores and the  Internet for new experiences. You will begin noticing strange bottlings by companies that seem to go beyond the usual brand structures. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Kill Devil Guatemala – Darsa Distillery Aged 8 Years

Kill Devil Guatemala 8 years rum review by the fat rum pirateKill Devil is an old fashioned term for rum but this is a very new rum brand.  Coming from independent whisky bottler Hunter-Laing.  I came across these distinctive bottlings for the first time on a German website 4finespirits.  I was interested in trying them but importing spirits into the UK can be a bit of minefield (the German’s also have a different rate of VAT which further complicates things) so I passed over buying them straight away.
