J Wray and Nephew’s White Overproof Rum is highly acclaimed and widely available just about everywhere.
Further down the ABV scale J Wray and Nephew also bottle this entry level Jamaican Appleton Rum. Like the Special Appleton Jamaica Rum this is not bottled as part of the Estate series and as a result does not benefit from the wonderful stubby bottle treatment.
Ron Zacapa XO is the “super premium” addition to the regular Ron Zacapa range. There are many others yearly variations on the rum but this one along with the Sistema Solera 23 has been available for a number of years now.
I’m sure we are all aware of the marketing and the awards Ron Zacapa have won over the years. Not to mention the criticism the brand has come in for due to the sugar additions to their rums. Zacapa holds the accolade of being widely recognised as “one of the best rums in the world” on one hand whilst seen as the devil itself by many within the rum community.
There were a couple of rumours going round the internet last year that Old Monk Rum was going out of production, It appears those rumours were false. Still I felt it was about time that I published my review of Old Monk Supreme.
Bought as an impulse purchase online – it had previously been available very briefily and then disappeared again. I wasn’t going to miss out on this unique Monk shaped bottle again.

In the real world together with his wife Robin and son Robert V Burr , Robert hosts and organises the annual Miami Rum Renaissance Festival the largest gathering of rum lovers in the world. They also host the Rum Renaissance Caribbean Cruise, an adventure for rum enthusiasts to visit distilleries and rum shops on many islands.
This is the 81st anniversary edition of the 1931. Following up from 2011’s original edition. St Lucia Distillers are perhaps most famous for their Chairman’s Reserve and Admiral Rodney rums.
Domestically their Bounty rum is very popular, though strangely not widely available outside the Caribbean. It is available in the US under the Denros brand.
Nicaraguan rum producers Compania Licorera De Nicaragua S.A have been “slow ageing” their “Tradicion Artesenal” Flor De Cana rum since 1890 in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua.
Sometime in 2014 they decided to change the labelling throughout their range. The age statements were removed and the conspiracies began……..
