Barrel Char in a Jar. Despite what the Hydrometer Tests may have some believe I’m not a very “scientific” kind of person. I have been able to perform Hydrometer Tests on rum because it is very, very simple. I am no chemist the little science background I have was left behind aged 16, when I picked up a double award “B” grade in Co-Ordinated (Chemistry, Physics and Biology) Science at GCSE level in 1994.
Alnwick Rum Golden Spiced. Alnwick Rum is a bit of an icon up here in the North East. I reviewed the original Alnwick rum a couple of years back (a re-review if forthcoming as I do feel I got the original review wrong).
This is their Golden Spiced expression which was released in late 2015. Golden Spiced is a blend of the original Alnwick rum with a mixture of spices and flavours such as Black Pepper and Ginger. At the time of release they deliberately stated they were staying away from the vanilla flavour profile preferred by many other producers.
Velier Royal Navy Very Old Rum. I would suggest that it is unlikely the Italian Navy will be getting a daily tot of this particular rum.
Released in late 2017 this is a very interesting release from Velier. A blend of rums from three different islands. Rum Categorisation is a funny old thing Navy Rum in particular is a strange rum to try and “categorise”. In the UK we have a number of brands that occupy the lower tier in terms of price that call themselves “Navy Rum”. This Navy Rum is a blend of rum from the old style British Caribbean – so we have rum from Trinidad, Guyana and Jamaica.
Kill Devil Jamaica Hampden Distillery. Hampden Distillery as is the trend in Jamaica is better known as Hampden Estate. This is largely because these distilleries did/do produce their own sugar cane on their vast estates. So they are not just simply a distillery.
Kill Devil have featured quite prominently on the site over the past two years. They began issuing 46% ABV single cask spirits in a similar fashion to bottlers such as Cadenhead’s and Samaroli. Like Cadenheads Kill Devil have now moved into Cask Strength bottlings.
