S.M.W.S Cask No R11.11 Pushing the Frontiers of Funk. You can always rely on the S.M.W.S (Scotch Malt Whisky Society) to give their rums an interesting name. It’s quite common within the Scotch Whisky world in general, to find more detailed or more “floral” descriptions, than you might find in the Rum scene.

Worthy Park 109 Jamaica Rum. Originally this was due to be released as Worthy Park Gunpowder Proof. Unfortunately, a certain brand of Navy rum with a fondness for litigation expressed it’s legal objections to such a name and Worthy Park opted to call the rum simply 109 instead.
For those not familiar with higher proof rums. 109 denotes the “proof”. Which is double the Alcohol by Volume (ABV) measurement, more popularly used here in the UK. In the US they tend to give both the proof and the ABV, whereas in the UK and Europe we tend to just opt for the ABV. So in case you can’t do the maths Worthy Park 109 Jamaica Rum is 54.5% ABV. Simples.
Worthy Park Single Estate 2006 Aged 12 Years. Today we have an official release from the rising stars of Jamaican rum, Worthy Park. This is their longest aged official release to date. It is taken from the second year of the revived production at the distillery.
The rum is WPL (Worthy Park Light) with an ester count between 60-119 gr/hl AA. So it’s not a huge high ester rum. To be fair that’s not what Worthy Park are about. They can leave that to the others. Their rums are very distinctive.
Velier Royal Navy Tiger Shark. The second installment in Velier’s “Velier Royal Navy” series of rums. I was first introducted to this in October at London Rumfest, at a Velier seminar.
Obviously there isn’t actually a Velier Royal Navy but Velier do have excellent stocks of tropically aged rum from all the traditional Navy Rum producing islands.
That Boutique-y Rum Company Secret Distillery #1 Jamaica. A release from a “Secret Distillery” in Jamaica sounds fantastic doesn’t it? Just imagine that The Boutique-y Rum Company have access to an as yet unknown Jamaican rum distillery. Is this a new start up or is it a tiny distiller who has been making their own moonshine for centuries?
Rum of the Year 2018 – Winner
It was quite a surprise when compiling the contenders for Rum of the Year, to see which rums didn’t make the grade.
As I only pick one rum from the 100 or so I review in a year, it comes down to the very best of the best. So a lot of excellent (and highly recommended) rums fall by the wayside.
Habitation Velier Forsyths 151 Proof White 2nd edition. A version of this type of rum was originally released back in 2016. This 2nd edition was released earlier this year. Should you be unsure which release you are buying the 2nd edition comes in a see through bottle and the first edition. was released in an opaque bottle.
