Don Q Gran Anejo

Don Q Gran Anejo rum review by the fat rum pirateDon Q Gran Anejo is a top of the range sipping rum from Puerto Rican domestic powerhouse Serralles.

The Gran Anejo is a blend of rums aged up to 12 years from Serralles aged stocks.  It is noted (unsurprisingly) that these are amongst their “finest” aged stocks.

Puerto Rico is perhaps best known for being one of Bacardi Internationals rum producing nations.  Their flagship rum Bacardi Superior is produced there.  However the Serralles family have been producing rum on the island since 1865. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Ron Cubay Anejo

Ron Cubay Anejo rum review by the fat rum pirateRon Cubay Anejo is a Cuban rum.  In 1964 Ron Cubay was founded in Santo Domingo, Villa Clara. Ron Cubay rums are produced by Cuba Ron S.A which also produce Havana Club. The Ron Cubay brand was only ever intended for domestic consumption, hence the reason that we are only just seeing it in the UK with it only having a presence in Europe since around 2010. Don Q Anejo

Don Q Anejo rum review by the fat rum pirateDon Q Anejo is one of the two more “premium” rums available in the UK from Puerto Rican producers Serralles. The Don Q brand has recently been re-vamped and they are actively trying to get a foothold in the UK market, which is currently dominated by another Puerto Rican concern – Bacardi and brands from Diageo such as Captain Morgan. Clairin Casimir

Clairin Casimir 2 rum review by the fat rum pirateClairin Casimir (batch 2) hails from the Douglas Casimir Distillery in Baraderes, Haiti.  The Clairins (Vaval and Sajous) are series of three different Clairins from three different distilleries all on Haiti.  Exported from Haiti by Velier for the European market.

Clairin is a spirit distilled from sugar cane juice rather than molasses.  It is technically very similar to rhum agricole.  Due to the relatively lo-fi nature of the distilleries and their traditional methods clairin is much less refined and more “raw” than most rhum agricole. Ron de Jeremy XO Rum review by the fat rum pirateI’m sure we have all seen the gold medals before, either on the actual bottle or for more premium offerings, on the box.

Rum-Bar White Overproof

Rum-Bar White Overproof rum review by the fat rum pirateRum-Bar Rum is a brand which is part of the Rum-Bar Brand family.

They have two types of rum; Overproof and Gold, plus a Rum Cream Liqueur and even a Vodka all from the Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica.

Rum-Bar Rum is the original core product and is in the Overproof Rum Category.

A direct competitor for the more established Wray Nephew White Overproof. Similarities between Rum-Bar White Overproof and Wray & Nephew are immediate – both use the colours of the Jamaican flag – Yellow, Green and Black and come in tall clear bottles which display the crystal liquid inside. This offering from Worthy Park has a slightly more contempory feel to it.  The Rum-Bar branding and the Worthy Park emblem are striking and give this rum its own clear identity. The rum is currently available in the UK in 200ml bottles at Tesco (who also stock Wray & Nephew) and online from Ashanti drinks.
