Velier Caroni Distilled 2000 Aged 17 Years TWE Exclusive. Here we have another Caroni bottling this time from the masters of Tropically Aged Caroni – Italian wine and spirits importer – Velier.
For this release Velier have teamed up with The Whisky Exchange, to give us a Full Proof Heavy Trinidad Rum. This Velier/TWE Caroni 2000 has been aged for 17 years solely in Trinidad.
Liberte Black Spiced Rum is a new entrant to the ever expanding Spiced Rum market. Liberte Black Spiced Rum is actually a supermarket “own brand”. This one hails from German discount supermarket Lidl.
It has already received a bit of coverage in the press as perhaps being an alternative to the ever Popular “The Kraken”. The Kraken pretty much has the “Dark Spiced” market sewn up. For some reason despite the ongoing popularity of Morgan’s Spiced Gold – the Captain Morgan company have done little to promote or make available their Black Spiced Rum in the UK. Despite making it pretty much a Kraken knock off in terms of appearance.
Velier Caroni No Smoking? After their Demerara rums (RIP) Velier Spa are best known in the rum world for their range of rum from the Caroni Distillery in Trinidad. The Caroni Distillery closed for the final time circa 2002/3.
As in the whisky world with Port Ellen rums it seems that the pull of a “Lost Distillery” is difficult to resist. Velier Caroni rum has become some of the most sought after and prized distillate in the Rum World. Which is strange because if you speak with Richard Seale of Foursquare he will tell you their distinctive flavour is based on “bad distillation”.
Cane Island are a new Independent bottler. We have already covered their 8 Year Old Barbados rum – a rather good one from Foursquare.
Up next is an 8 Year Old from Trinidad. Which means it is to young to come from the the now defunct and much heralded Caroni distillery. Leaving us with the only remaining option on Trinidad – Angostura.
The latest release from Bristol is this (near) Cask Strength effort from the Caroni Distillery. Bristol have released a good few Caroni rums over the past few years. Including their 1974 effort, which I have sadly yet to review.
Amongst these I seem to remember a Cask Strength Caroni which was possibly released for the Danish or European market only?
Another independent bottling from Kill Devil. This time we are taking a trip to Trinidad. This rum is one of the first releases by Kill Devil to be released at Cask Strength.
As the rum is bottled at Cask Strength the packaging has been tweaked slightly. The lozenge label on the tube and on the bottle are red/purple in colour rather than gold as on the 46% ABV rums.
