Saint James Royal Ambre 45%. A pleasant surprise when on holiday in Salou, Spain, was stumbling across a litre bottle of this difficult to find 45% ABV Royal Ambre.
Whilst the Saint James brand is omnipresent in France, it is not so popular in Spain. This particular bottling I had not seen available in the UK for quite some time. Only the 40% ABV version.
Rhum Neisson Blanc 55%. Neisson are a Rhum Agricole producer from Martinique. Neisson produce their rhums from sugar cane harvested at their distillery and are a cane to bottle operatiion. They are not a brand that buy in rhum for blending and ageing.
Set up in 1931 Distillerie Neisson or Thieubert-Carbet and situated in the Le Carbet area of the island on the North-Caribbean coastline, sadly Distillerie Neisson is the only distillery still operating in the area.
Rhum Depaz Rhum Hors D’Age Agricole XO. Or we could call it the Grande Reserve XO. Either way this is one of the top rums in the Depaz range. Rhum Depaz hail from the French Island of Martinique. Rhum Depaz produce their agricole rhum in line with the AOC Martinique guidelines. So its “full on” agricole rhum if you like.
Rhum Depaz Rhum Vieux Agricole Hors D’Age Port Cask Finish. Rhum Depaz are an Agricole Rhum producer from the French West Indies.
More specifically they hail from the island of Martinique. Rhum Agricole from Martinque can be produced in line with the AOC. The AOC – Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is the French equivalent to EU’s Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Rhum Clement Vieux Select Barrel. We’ve featured a couple of Rhum Clement offerings on the site so far. As I continue to expand my horizons in the r(h)um world I will be trying a lot more Agricole Rhum and Cachaca.
Rhum Clement hail from the island of Martinique. Although Martinique rhums are often produced in line with the AOC, this particular rhum has not been made within the strict confines of the AOC guidelines. So you do not see any AOC markings on the bottle. This is noted as being a contemporary Rhum Agricole on their literature.
Trois Rivieres Cuvee de Moulin – Rough translation Three Rivers Blend of the Mill. Is a limited edtion expression from Martinique producer Trois Rivieres.
It is a blend of rums carefully matured for over three years in ex Cognac and Bourbon casks. Marketed as a “rhum vieux agricole” – aged. The producer advises it can be sipped neat or mixed in cocktails.
Saint James Royal Ambre is a Rhum Agricole from the French speaking island of Martinique.
For those unfamiliar with Rhum Agricole it is rum made from fresh cane juice as opposed to Rhum Industriel which is produced from molasses or other sugar by products.
The term Rhum Industriel is not widely used as it has negative connotations and those that do produce rhum in this way have no desire or motivation to market their products as such. As most production occurs outside of the French speaking islands it has no real meaning. The term when used in derogative way does Rhum Agricole’s snobbish overpriced reputation little favours.
