Habitation La Favorite Cuvee Speciale 1995 – La Confrerie du Rhum

La Favourite Confrerie du Rhum rum review by the fat rum pirateLa Favorite hailing from Martinique will be a familiar name to those of you who enjoy French Rhum or Agricole Rhum as it is more commonly known.

Agricole Rhum (agricultural rum) differs from Molasses based rum in that it is produced from Sugar Cane Juice rather than molasses.  You may also have heard of a spirits called Cachaca which is made from Sugar Cane Juice.  I’m not entirely sure what the difference is but other than in Brasil Agricole Rhum is much more popular.  Molasses based rum in contract to “agricole” rum can be called “industrial” rum.  I’m sure you can understand why most rum producers don’t opt to categorise their rum in such a way! Berry’s St Lucia Rum Aged 11 Years

Berrys St Lucia Rum Review by the fat rum pirateBerry’s Bros & Rudd (BBR for short) is London’s oldest and one of its most respected wine and spirits merchants.  They have traded from the same shop in St James Street since 1698.

They hold two warrants to supply wines and spirits to the Prince of Wales and the Queen!  So if I don’t give this bottle of rum a good review I might end up in the tower…. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Plantation Jamaica 2000

Plantation Jamaica 2000 rum review by the fat rum piratePlantation Rum should need little introduction.  Part of Cognac Ferrand, they finish and/or age rum they procure from all around the globe in cognac and other wine casks.

They also add “dosage” (a practice used in Cognac where sugar is added post distillation). Plantation tend to add around 16g/L on average. Their rums nearly always gain positive reviews and they have quite an extensive network of representatives and they are not afraid to promote the brand.  They have a large presence at all the more prestigious Rum Festivals and Competitions.  More often than not coming home with an array of awards. Appleton Jamaica Rum – White

Appleton White rum review by the fat rum pirateJ Wray and Nephew’s White Overproof Rum is highly acclaimed and widely available just about everywhere.

Further down the ABV scale J Wray and Nephew also bottle this entry level Jamaican Appleton Rum.  Like the Special Appleton Jamaica Rum this is not bottled as part of the Estate series and as a result does not benefit from the wonderful stubby bottle treatment. Ron Zacapa XO Centenario Solera Gran Reserva Especial

Ron Zacapa XO Rum review by the fat rum pirateRon Zacapa XO is the “super premium” addition to the regular Ron Zacapa range.  There are many others yearly variations on the rum but this one along with the Sistema Solera 23 has been available for a number of years now.

I’m sure we are all aware of the marketing and the awards Ron Zacapa have won over the years.  Not to mention the criticism the brand has come in for due to the sugar additions to their rums.  Zacapa holds the accolade of being widely recognised as “one of the best rums in the world” on one hand whilst seen as the devil itself by many within the rum community. Old Monk Supreme XXX Rum Very Old Vatted

Old Monk Supreme XXX Rum review by the fat rum pirateThere were a couple of rumours going round the internet last year that Old Monk Rum was going out of production,  It appears those rumours were false. Still I felt it was about time that I published my review of Old Monk Supreme.

Bought as an impulse purchase online – it had previously been available very briefily and then disappeared again.  I wasn’t going to miss out on this unique Monk shaped bottle again. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

El Dorado Rare Selection

EL Dorado Rare SelectionOn the 14th January 2016 Demerara Distillers Limited announced their first foray into the world of Cask Strength bottlings.  Except they didn’t, well not directly anyway.

As of today (15th January 2016) the only place you will readily find information relating to these releases in any kind of “official” capacity is on the Velier website.  Yes I know its in Italian.  So here is a translation (it’s not perfect but you should get the general message) Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
