Ron Cubay Reserva Especial

Ron Cubay 10 Year Reserva Especial rum review by the fat rum pirateRon Cubay in case anyone is any doubt, is a rum from Cuba.  Cuban rum has become even hotter property recently as news that the US of A will soon be getting stocks of what, until very recently has been forbidden fruit for our friends over the pond.

Forget about the pointless rangling over the Havana Club brand by Havana Club and Bacardi International, as here we have one of the more domesticated Cuban rums. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Don Q Gran Anejo

Don Q Gran Anejo rum review by the fat rum pirateDon Q Gran Anejo is a top of the range sipping rum from Puerto Rican domestic powerhouse Serralles.

The Gran Anejo is a blend of rums aged up to 12 years from Serralles aged stocks.  It is noted (unsurprisingly) that these are amongst their “finest” aged stocks.

Puerto Rico is perhaps best known for being one of Bacardi Internationals rum producing nations.  Their flagship rum Bacardi Superior is produced there.  However the Serralles family have been producing rum on the island since 1865. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Ron Pujol Dorado

imageFrench producers Bardinet are behind the Ron Pujol brand nowadays, though the rum has a heritage stretching back to 1818.

Research on the internet has been difficult – the official Ron Pujol website is in Spanish (it’s actually Catalan you ignoramous) and resists any translation.

It would seem that this is perhaps the Spanish version of Negrita?  For those not familiar with the brand, Ron Negrita is another of Bardinet’s offerings.  It is a mixture of agricole and molasses based      r(h)um and is popular and easy to find in both Spain and France.  Ron Pujol offers more of a “ron” experience than a “rhum”. Ron Yacare Anejo

Ron Yacare Review by the fat rum pirateRon Yacare is an Anejo (aged) rum from the Dominican Republic.  It has been difficult to find any information regarding this rum, mainly due to this being predominantly for the Spanish speaking market.

Ron Yacare from the information on the bottle is distributed by Carrefour Supermarket group.  I assume it is available in their stores, which are found mostly in France and Spain.  From web searches they also produce a Honey based Ron Miel and they have a Viejo and Reserva Exclusiva expression as well.  I think that Yacare is more of a brand name and I do not think all of the rums in their range come from the Dominican Republic. Mezan Panama 1999

Mezan Panama 1999 Rum review by the fat rum pirateAnother try out with a Mezan rum.  At these prices it would simply have been rude not to give Mezan a fair crack of the whip.  With Mezan trying to do things the “right way” (in many peoples eyes – including their own) I simply had to persevere with their range.

This Panama 1999 is another one of my more unusual purchases.  The original idea was to finally try one of Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez’s rums.  I’d focused on the reasonably priced 7 year old celebrity cash in Ron De Jeremy.  Then I saw this Mezan distilled in 1999 and bottled between 2012 and 2014 (I have only seen that around on the net so it may well be wrong I cannot find a definitive age). Pampero Anejo Especial

Pampero Anejo Especial Rum ReviewRon Pampero is typically known by Venezuelan’s as “Caballito Frenao” (literal translation “The Restrained Horse”).  Which is guess explains in part the man astride a white horse on it red label (though it shows no sign of restraints). For those unfamiliar with Venezuela it is sandwiched between Guyana and Venezuela.  Venezuela’s coast line is on the Caribbean Sea.
