1931 St Lucia Distillers – 2nd Edition

1931 St Lucia Distillers (2nd Edition) review by the fat rum pirateThis is the 81st anniversary edition of the 1931.  Following up from 2011’s original edition.  St Lucia Distillers are perhaps most famous for their Chairman’s Reserve and Admiral Rodney rums.

Domestically their Bounty rum is very popular, though strangely not widely available outside the Caribbean.  It is available in the US under the Denros brand. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Hydrometer Tests – A Witch Hunt

Hydrometer Tests by the fat rum pirateA Witch Hunt historically concerned mass hysteria and moral panic.  For those who have suggested the Hydrometer Tests as being a “Witch Hunt” let me make it very clear – there is no panic or hysteria here.  Nor I doubt Johnny Drejer or Cyril at DuRhum are panicking too much either. Ron de Jeremy XO

Ron de Jeremy XO Rum review by the fat rum pirateRon de Jeremy XO was released in the UK on the 26th October 2015.  With the original Ron de Jeremy and the Spiced variants already available, this “ron” is One Eyed Spirits’ attempt to break in the more “Premium” end of the market.

In the UK the market is saturated with “Premium” rums in the £35-55 price range.  Rums such as Pyrat XO. Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva, Ron Zacapa et al. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Rum

Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Rum will be for many the top of the tree in terms of Appleton tasting.

With the Appleton Estate 21 Year Old coming in (depending on how savvy you shop), at just over £100, the 30 Year Old now largely unavailable and the Exclusive only available at the Appleton Distillery, it is unlikely many will make the jump from a £100 rum to the next readily available rum.  The 50 Year Old.  The £3500 price tag will put off most of you reading this review. Rum-Bar Rum Cream

Rum Bar Rum Cream Review by the fat rum pirateRum-Bar Rum Cream from Worthy Park Estate, Jamaica.  Until recently only rums and spiced rums have featured for review on the site.

With Christmas upon us I figured, we may as well continue the festive theme of the Rumvent Calendar with a liqueur!

Whisky based liqueurs such as Baileys are very popular in the UK, especially in the run up to Christmas.  Most Supermarkets discount them and price-wars frequently break out. A more “premium” Deluxe Baileys was released recently believe it or not! Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Angostura 5 Year Old Rum

imageDespite the presence of Angostura in the rum and bitters market, it doesn’t seem that their younger rums have caught the imagination.

At least amongst the Rum Reviewing community as I have been unable to find any reviews of this 5 year old rum and only a couple for its older brother the 7 year old.  When it comes to Angostura it seems that life for many begins at 1919 and 1824. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Westerhall Plantation Rum

Westerhall Plantation Rum Review by the fat rum pirateWesterhall Estate was once a bustling hive of sugar and rum production on the island of Grenada.  Nowadays the Estate offers a visitors centre to remind visitors of the rum and sugar production of the past.

Rum is still produced under the Westerhall Estate brand.  However, it is no longer rum made from native sugar cane, not is it made from rum distilled on the island.  Westerhall’s rums are made from rum imported from Trinidad, bottled and blended on the island.
