Don Q Cristal

Don Q Cristal Rum Review by the fat rum pirateDon Q Cristal is the brands entry level white rum.  Don Q hail from Puerto Rico like Bacardi.  Like Bacardi they also distill their rums using column distillation.  Unlike Bacardi they are quite well thought of particularly in their native country.

Around 18 months ago Don Q had a major re-brand and began marketing and distributing their rums to wider global audience.  Don Q’s range is now readily available in the UK through mail order and sprinkling of stores.  I’ve previously reviewed their “dark” rum range but never quite got around to writing about the Cristal. rockact81r Mogwai Rum

Mogwai Rum Rockact81r Rum Review by the fat rum pirate Demerararockact81r Mogwai Rum is without doubt one of the oddest rums I have ever known to be bottled.  This rum is not a homage to the pre-horror stage of the furry little animals in the film Gremlins.

Though the band which the rum is named after obviously did take their name from the film.  Quite why a Scottish post-rock band called themselves Mogwai is one thing, quite why a Scottish post rock band would want to release a rum? I’m kind of stumped. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Diplomatico Mantuano

Diplomatico Botucal Mantuano Rum Review by the fat rum pirateDiplomatico (or Botucal in Germany) Mantuano – meaning nobleman and also a cocoa producing town in Venezeula.  Which is where Diplomatico rums are produced.

Diplomatico Mantuano was showcased at the London Rumfest in October 2016.  It is a direct replacement for the companies Reserva rum.  It has retained the orange parts of that rums colour scheme and the ornate rounded stubby bottle.  I always feel these bottles look smaller than most 70cl bottles.  Clearly this is an optical illusion as they hold the same amount of liquor. Red Bonny Dark Rum

Red Bonny Dark Rum Review by the fat rum pirateRed Bonny Dark Rum a rum which has been on my rader for quite some time.  I did expect to pick it up at a bit of discount at some point but that just never materialised.

Costing around £23 for a 70cl bottle with an ABV of 40% this is not a terribly expensive rum.  It has surprisingly held a very rigid price online.  I fully expected one of the larger supermarkets to stock this rum at some point but this doesn’t look like it is going to happen either! Matugga Spiced Rum

MAtugga Spiced Rum Review by the fat rum pirateMatugga Spiced Rum is the latest in a batch of new Spiced Rums which are using English Spirit Distillery’s Old Salt Rum as their pot still rum base.

I recently reviewed Matugga Golden Rum just in time for its release at the London Rumfest in November.  I also published a press release which should explain just about everything you need to know about the brand. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
