Rum Chata is a product new to the UK market in 2015. It is noted in other territories as “Horchata con Ron”. For those not familiar with the term, “Horchata” is in this particular instance a rice, milk or cream based drink with vanilla and Cinnamon flavourings common in Mexico.

Gold of Mauritius quite a grandiose title and one which certainly sets this rum up as one that really needs to impress! Mauritian rum has come to our attention before we have reviewed two Penny Blue expressions from the Medine Distillery.
Gold of Mauritus offers a slightly different take on rum – but lets not say too much at this point.
French producers Bardinet are behind the Ron Pujol brand nowadays, though the rum has a heritage stretching back to 1818.
Research on the internet has been difficult – the official Ron Pujol website is in Spanish (it’s actually Catalan you ignoramous) and resists any translation.
It would seem that this is perhaps the Spanish version of Negrita? For those not familiar with the brand, Ron Negrita is another of Bardinet’s offerings. It is a mixture of agricole and molasses based r(h)um and is popular and easy to find in both Spain and France. Ron Pujol offers more of a “ron” experience than a “rhum”.
Captain Morgan along with Bacardi probably gets the most abuse of all the rum companies. It is part of drinks giant Diageo’s portfolio of brands and is one of the most recognised throughout the world.
Whilst the companies Jamaica (or Dark) rum really isn’t worthy of too much criticism (it’s decidedly average), like Bacardi the strange flavoured rums the group have released, particularly over the pond are never going to win them many fans amongst rum conisseurs or purists.
Bacardi Carta Fuego – Red Spiced Rum to give it it’s full moniker. In 2011 Bacardi moved away from creating weird and wonderful Flavoured Rums and introduced their competitor in the Spiced Rum market – Bacardi Oakheart.
If things had went to plan then we would all be at least familiar with, if not drinking an Oak And Coke. As many of you will be puzzled by this, its safe to say that things didn’t go quite as planned for Bacardi as Oakheart failed to make a major dent in Captain Morgan’s Musket and The Kraken seem to have the Dark end of the Spiced rum market all sewn up. That’s not to mention Sailor Jerry and the numerous copy-cats which have sprung up in the wake of the success of the now deceased Tattoo Artist at the tail end of the “noughties” (00’s).
Plantation have become multi award winners in recent times and this entry level rum has been one of the companies success stories. The Original Dark is a blend of rums from Trinidad given the unmistakable Plantation treatment. Double ageing and “dosage”.
This rum has recently been re-formulated and re-packaged. It also forms the basis of their much hyped Stiggin’s Fancy which is a Pineapple infused rum which is due for release sometime soon……I haven’t seen anything definite as yet.
Banks 5 Island Blend Rum hails from the hotbed of rum producers – Singapore. It is bottled by the Joseph Banks Rums Corporation PTE, Ltd. I’m not sure who Joseph Banks is but I bet there is a story behind him somewhere…….
Strangely the website does not have a story relating to some swashbuckling pirate or buccaneer from centuries ago. It merely states that the rum is produced as a labour of love by the Joseph Banks Rum Company. Further reading reveals that Joseph Banks was an 18th century explorer and botanist.
