Banks 5 Island Blend Rum

Banks 5 Island Blend Rum review by the fat rum pirateBanks 5 Island Blend Rum hails from the hotbed of rum producers – Singapore.  It is bottled by the Joseph Banks Rums Corporation PTE, Ltd.  I’m not sure who Joseph Banks is but I bet there is a story behind him somewhere…….

Strangely the website does not have a story relating to some swashbuckling pirate or buccaneer from centuries ago.  It merely states that the rum is produced as a labour of love by the Joseph Banks Rum Company.  Further reading reveals that Joseph Banks was an 18th century explorer and botanist. Admiral Vernon’s Old J Spiced

Admiral Vernon Old J Spiced Rum review by the fat rum pirateAdmiral Edward Vernon AKA “Old Grog” was responsible for a reduction in the British Royal Navy’s rum ration in 1740.  Many of the sailors were dissatisfied with the dilution of their rum ration and legend has it that Admiral Vernon suggested the men spruce up their “tot” with sugar and limes. Bacardi Oakheart

image In 2011 after numerous “flavoured” expressions and a couple of rum “liqueurs” Bacardi finally released a Spiced rum to the market.  Except at only 35% they aren’t legally allowed to market it as a Spiced rum so it becomes a Smooth and Spiced Spirit Drink.

Oakheart takes its name from the charred white oak barrels that the rum, sorry spirit drink is housed in.  The rums contained within the blend are aged between 1-3 years.  Bacardi were hoping upon its release that the tagline “Oak and Coke” would be heard in bars all over the world.  I don’t think that has quite worked. Mekhong The Spirit of Thailand

Mekhong review the fat rum pirate rumMekhong The Spirit of Thailand.  I’m not sure how much translation plays a part in these things but from what I can gather this “rum” (I’ll explain later) is named after the river Mekong which runs through Thailand.  Yes I know the spelling isn’t the same.  I’m using what is on the bottle though it is often spelt Mekong as well. Lamb’s Navy Rum

Lambs Navy Rum ReviewLamb’s Navy Rum is seen in just about every Supermarket off-license, public house and Working Mens Club (WMC) the length and breadth of England (and quite possible Scotland and Wales too).

Originally created in 1849 from a blend of new fewer than 18 rums from Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica and Guyana by Alfred Lamb.  The rum has been available in the UK pretty much unbroken since 1872.  The rum was originally stored in the famous West India Dock Warehouse just off the Thames.  The rum was then aged for 4 years.  For more information please see the Lamb’s Navy Rum site. Maraska Room

MaraskaRoomNo your eyes do not deceive you.  Along with the outdated Caribbean stereotype so loved by my European cousins we have here a Room rather than a Rum.  From Maraska.

When many folk consider a cruise no doubt they look forward to seeing numerous Caribbean Islands and outposts.  Happy in the knowledge that they will be able to try a smorgasbord of fine high quality rums.  It is a rum lover’s dream indeed. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
