Jefferson’s 1785 Extra Fine Dark Rum

Jefferson's 1785 Dark Rum review by the fat rum pirateThe Jefferson family have a long and rich history in the rum world.  They were one of the first families to import sugar (and subsequently rum) to UK shores.  The family is preserved in history at the Rum Story attraction in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

I will spare you the history lesson and instead direct you to their website. I will instead focus on the rum under review rather than too much of the families history. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Mezan Jamaica XO

Mezan Jamaica XO Rum Review by the Fat Rum PirateMezan are an independent bottler from the UK.  They have featured quite regularly on this site and this is the second Jamaica Rum from Mezan we have reviewed.

Mezan Jamaica XO is, unlike all the other Mezan rums a blend rather than a Single Barrel/Cask offering.  Not only is it a blend of rums it is also a blend of rums from different distilleries. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Plantation Stiggins’ Fancy 1824 Recipe

Stiggins Fancy Plantation rum review by the fat rum pirateStiggins’ Fancy 1824 Recipe Pineapple Rum has finally hit UK shores.  Plantation the makers of this rum have certainly created a real buzz around this and the sole current stockist of this rum have been overwhelmed with demand for this product.

Rum brand Plantation is owned by Maison/Cognac Ferrand and whilst they may not be quite in the same league as industry giants Bacardi International and Diageo they certainly know how to market their Plantation line of rums. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Koko Kanu

Koko Kanu rum review by the fat rum pirateHailing from Jamaica comes Koko Kanu.  Which is a first on this site as its a flavoured, rather than a “Spiced” rum.  Distilled by J Wray and Nephew it certainly should have a solid rum at the heart of it.

In the UK Malibu is without doubt the most popular Coconut “rum” but at only 21% it falls massively short of what can be labelled a rum.  In reality it is little more than a Coconut and rum liqueur.  Like Koko Kanu it also has a decent base rum as it is produced at West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD) home of Cockspur Rum.  The Malibu brand (12 flavours now available worldwide) is owned by Pernod Ricard. Rum-Bar White Overproof

Rum-Bar White Overproof rum review by the fat rum pirateRum-Bar Rum is a brand which is part of the Rum-Bar Brand family.

They have two types of rum; Overproof and Gold, plus a Rum Cream Liqueur and even a Vodka all from the Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica.

Rum-Bar Rum is the original core product and is in the Overproof Rum Category.

A direct competitor for the more established Wray Nephew White Overproof. Similarities between Rum-Bar White Overproof and Wray & Nephew are immediate – both use the colours of the Jamaican flag – Yellow, Green and Black and come in tall clear bottles which display the crystal liquid inside. This offering from Worthy Park has a slightly more contempory feel to it.  The Rum-Bar branding and the Worthy Park emblem are striking and give this rum its own clear identity. The rum is currently available in the UK in 200ml bottles at Tesco (who also stock Wray & Nephew) and online from Ashanti drinks. Plantation Jamaica 2000

Plantation Jamaica 2000 rum review by the fat rum piratePlantation Rum should need little introduction.  Part of Cognac Ferrand, they finish and/or age rum they procure from all around the globe in cognac and other wine casks.

They also add “dosage” (a practice used in Cognac where sugar is added post distillation). Plantation tend to add around 16g/L on average. Their rums nearly always gain positive reviews and they have quite an extensive network of representatives and they are not afraid to promote the brand.  They have a large presence at all the more prestigious Rum Festivals and Competitions.  More often than not coming home with an array of awards. Appleton Jamaica Rum – White

Appleton White rum review by the fat rum pirateJ Wray and Nephew’s White Overproof Rum is highly acclaimed and widely available just about everywhere.

Further down the ABV scale J Wray and Nephew also bottle this entry level Jamaican Appleton Rum.  Like the Special Appleton Jamaica Rum this is not bottled as part of the Estate series and as a result does not benefit from the wonderful stubby bottle treatment.
