Kill Devil Barbados Aged 14 Years

Kill Devil Barbados Aged 14 Years rum review by the fat rum pirateKill Devil Barbados Aged 14 Years. Another Kill Devil rum from Hunter Laing and another Single Blended rum from the Foursquare Distillery, Barbados.

As with all the Kill Devil rums (aside from a couple of blends) this is a single cask rum. Kill Devil have coloured coded their rums. All the rums in the range come in the familiar black cylinder and opaque bottle. However those issued at Cask Strength have a black and purple/pink colour scheme. Those that are diluted to 46% ABV maintain the black and gold colour scheme. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Rum is Fun but it isn’t Dumb….not anymore

Rum is FunRum is Fun so the mantra goes.  I once asked Dave Broom if rum needed to lose its “fun” tag to improve its image.  Dave’s overwhelming response was a very definite no.  He has even mentioned me posing the question in his latest rum book The Manual.

Dave believes that rum should keep its “fun” tag as it makes people smile when they think of it.  He also felt that when Scotch Whisky forgot about “fun” the industry entered two decades of decline. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Single Cane Estate Rums – Worthy Park

Single Cane Estate Rum Worthy Park Rum review by the fat rum pirateSingle Cane Estate Rums – Worthy Park is actually a Bacardi International Brand. Acting almost like an independent bottler Bacardi, released a couple of rums (this and a Dominican Republic rum) into the Travel Retail market in 2015.

Worthy Park for those who aren’t familiar is a re-born rum distillery from Jamaica.  Forced to close in the nineteen sixties due by the Jamaican government the distillery began operating again in 2005.  A number of Worthy Park rums from 2005 and 2006 have been released onto the Independent market over the past couple of years. Foursquare Rum Distillery Criterion

Foursquare Rum Distillery Criterion Rum Review by the fat rum pirateFoursquare Rum Distillery Criterion is the latest rum in their Exceptional Cask Selection.  It seems that in the Foursquare world it never rains but it pours.  Just last year we were spoilt with numbers 3 and 4 in the Exceptional Cask Selection and the “controversial” Foursquare 2006. St Abbs Captain’s Table XO

St Abbs Captains Table XO Rum review by the fat rum pirateSt Abbs Captain’s Table XO comes from newcomers Black Mountain Spirits.  They have three rums in the St Abbs range.  St Abbs is the brain child of entrepeneur David Owens.  David has a recent history in the rum world.  He was involved in Takamaka (formerly Takamaka Bay) rum which hailed from the Seychelles. Blackadder Raw Cask Barbados Foursquare Rum 11 Years Old

Blackadder Raw Cask Rum Foursquare Barbados aged 11 Years Rum Review by the fat rum pirateBlackadder Raw Cask Barbados Foursquare rum.  Blackadder’s Raw Cask rum selection are a number of rums which are “raw” and straight from the cask.  No colouring, no additives and no filtration, so they look a little cloudy and raw.

Sourcing Blackadder rum has proved difficult. I ended up getting this bottling from Poland, of all places.  This is particularly frustrating as most of Blackadder’s range is aged in the UK. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

rockact81r Mogwai Rum

Mogwai Rum Rockact81r Rum Review by the fat rum pirate Demerararockact81r Mogwai Rum is without doubt one of the oddest rums I have ever known to be bottled.  This rum is not a homage to the pre-horror stage of the furry little animals in the film Gremlins.

Though the band which the rum is named after obviously did take their name from the film.  Quite why a Scottish post-rock band called themselves Mogwai is one thing, quite why a Scottish post rock band would want to release a rum? I’m kind of stumped. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
