Plantation O.F.T.D. – Old Fashioned Traditional Dark

OFTD Rum review by the fat rum piratePlantation O.F.T.D is another trip into history from the French producers.  Following on from the Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple rum, O.F.T.D. which stands for Old Fashioned Traditional Dark is another attempt at recapturing the rum glories of old.

The rum seems to be a replcacement for the brands older Original Dark Overproof rum.  This means that both the Overproof and standard proof Original Dark rum have been given an overhaul.  Both rums were originally made up of rum from Trinidad.  I personally didn’t care much for either and went as far as suggesting the standard Original Dark was no better than supermarket rum such as Tesco’s Dark Rum – which is also a Trinidad “blend”.  As a result neither rum scored particularly highly. Cane Island Barbados Rum Aged 8 Years

Cane Island Rum Barbados 8 Years Old rum review by the fat rum piratCane Island are a relative newcomer to the market.  Last year they released a range of aged rums from Cuba, Barbados and Jamaica.  These were blends of rums from two different distilleries from each location.

Mount Gay Origin Series Volume 2 – The Copper Stills

Mount Gay Origins Series 2 Rum Review by the fat rum pirateReleased late in 2016 The Copper Stills is the second in the Origin Series from Bajan rum producers Mount Gay.  Origins Volume 2 focuses on the differing styles of rum produced from a traditional Pot and Column still.

A limited edition of 4800 bottles.  In this release you get two rums – both in 350ml bottles (two half bottles – you will get two 375ml in other territories).  The retail price is around £60.  The ABV for both rums is 43%  As you can see from the photos the rums come in an attractive brown presentation box, along with a series of informative cards. Rum of the Year 2016

The rum which will be crowned as Rum of the Year must have been released that year.  It also must be commercially available to the average rum consumer.  Any rums which were available prior to 2016 are ineligible.  Likewise any bottlings that were extremely limited or are unavailable as of today are also out. Mount Gay XO – Cask Strength

Mount Gay XO Cask Strength Rum Review by the fat rum pirateMount Gay established in 1703 report that they are the oldest rum brand in existence.  Which is arguable.  What cannot be argued is that they are one of the top producers of authentic rum in the Caribbean.
