Pusser’s Rum British Navy (75% ABV)

Pussers Rum Overproof Green Label Rum review by the fat rum piratePusser’s relaunched their rums in 2014 to stop all the confusion about the various Blue Labelled rums floating around different parts of the world at varying strengths.

One of the rums that caused the least confusion was this one.  Not because the bottle does not immediately make you think it is one of their lower proof rums but because it was and is only available in one country. For some reason our German cousins were not satisfied with a meagre 54.5% ABV rum and demanded more so this 75% ABV expression was launched for the German market only.  Thanks to the guys at Beers of Europe I was able to obtain a bottle for £49.99.  Which sounds quite expensive but once I’ve explained exactly how this 75% ABV rum SHOULD be drank you will see I wasn’t stung too badly. Pusser’s Rum British Navy (40% ABV)

imageMuch to my uncontrollable excitement Pusser’s Rum Ltd, recently re-vamped (and to be fair tidied up) their range of rums.  This was done partly to introduce new expressions but also to avoid confusion caused by the numerous “Blue Label” versions on offer in varying territories. El Dorado 15 Year Old Finest Demerara Rum – Special Reserve

El Dorado 15 Year Old Rum Review the fat rum pirate

EL Dorado 15 Rum Review

By luck rather than judgement (very questionable if you read my El Dorado 12 review) the “Special Reserve” became the first El Dorado rum I ever tried.  Having just received an expensive consignment of rum I happened to stroll into a well known discount store (Aldi) in a not so well known seaside town (Seaham Harbour).  I found on their shelves El Dorado 8 Year Old.  Obviously I immediately picked up a bottle and strode to the counter……… Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Rum Sixty Six Family Reserve

RUM 66 Foursquare Barbados Rum ReviewRum Sixty Six is a 12 year old Bajan Rum from Richard Seale’s Foursquare Distillery who also produce Doorlys amongst others.  The Foursquare distilleries rum are at the forefront of Bajan rum production and are respected and reviewed accordingly the world over.

Once again a discount led me to try this rum.  Not online or in a Supermarket but in a local wine merchant I have recently discovered.  If you are interested (and live in the North East of England) then here is the website http://www.thewinechambers.co.uk/.  Please note the website shows only 4 rums but he does stock around 20.  As good a selection as I’ve found in a physical shop.  The rum was reduced to £30.99 (I’m such a sucker for a sale sticker I can’t even tell you what it was reduced from!). Pusser’s Rum British Navy (54.5% ABV)

Pusser's British Navy Rum Review Guyana DemeraraPusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (it has recently been re-branded in the UK) is as near to the rum issued to sailors in the British Navy as you will get.  The “tot” was abolished in 1970.  Black Tot Day as it was called being 31 July 1970.

The rum is steeped in tradition and the website is very “naval” as is the packaging.  It’s very distinctive and slightly (IMO) gaudy.  However you do get a nice corked closure, which I always prefer.  You don’t get any fancy cardboard packaging with this rum just the bottle.  The rum hasn’t hit the supermarkets over here as yet.  This surprises me somewhat but it has found its way into most independent retailers.  The rum retails at around the £30 mark.  This seems a little expensive for a Navy Rum but it is 54.5% abv so it should last a bit longer.
