Velier Diamond and Port Mourant 1999

Velier Diamond and Port Morant 1999 rum review by the fat rum pirateVelier Diamond and Port Mourant a rare “blend” of Demerara rum from the Italian super bottlers.

From the Coffey stills at DDL and the Port Mourant Double Wooden Pot Still. These rums were distilled in 1999 and blended in the barrel, before being bottled in July 2014. A total of 1,148 bottles of this rum were available.  It is safe to say its pretty scarce now. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Foursquare Rum Distillery Zinfandel Cask Blend

Foursquare zinfandel cask blend rum review by the fat rum pirateFoursquare Rum Distillery St Philip, Barbados.  For many people Barbados is the birthplace of rum.  Which is handy because in the Richard Seale Foursquare have one of the most vocal rum producers.

Passionately against additives and very much against the more secretive side of the rum world Richard is currently involved with Luca Gargano of Velier in educating and trying to push through new classifications of rum. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Rum

Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Rum will be for many the top of the tree in terms of Appleton tasting.

With the Appleton Estate 21 Year Old coming in (depending on how savvy you shop), at just over £100, the 30 Year Old now largely unavailable and the Exclusive only available at the Appleton Distillery, it is unlikely many will make the jump from a £100 rum to the next readily available rum.  The 50 Year Old.  The £3500 price tag will put off most of you reading this review. Foursquare Rum Distillery Port Cask Finish

Foursquare Port Finish rum review by the fat rum pirateFoursquare Rum Distillery, St Philip, Barbados really should need no introduction.  Originally set up by Reginald Leon Seale the great-great grandfather of the current Master Blender and Distiller Richard Seale, the distillery has become the byword for classic Caribbean rum.

Any new release from Foursquare is always welcome.  The 2012 UK release of Rum Sixty Six was a welcome edition to the Foursquare portfolio, which also includes R L Seale’s 10 Year Old and the Doorly’s series of rums.  US drinkers may also be familiar with The Real McCoy range of rums.  In 2015 (and in particular August) we have been well and truly spoiled here in the UK.  Not only has Richard released the long anticipated Doorly’s 12 but has also decided that 9 years (quite an unusual age for a rum) has been long enough for us to wait for this latest offering. Bristol Black Spiced Rum

Bristol Spiced Rum review by the fat rum pirateBristol Classic Rum are a wonderful little bottling and ageing experiment, overseen by drinks legend John Barrett.  They produce some of the rum worlds most interesting independent bottlings and they price them competitively and sensibly, so most can access their wares.

I did contact John Barrett regarding this rum but unfortunately he is a very busy man and to date hasn’t got back to me.  I’ll send him a copy of this review when I’m finished and see if I get a response.  I appreciate that people are very busy so I’m always very grateful and appreciative when people do respond to my queries. Pusser’s Rum British Navy (75% ABV)

Pussers Rum Overproof Green Label Rum review by the fat rum piratePusser’s relaunched their rums in 2014 to stop all the confusion about the various Blue Labelled rums floating around different parts of the world at varying strengths.

One of the rums that caused the least confusion was this one.  Not because the bottle does not immediately make you think it is one of their lower proof rums but because it was and is only available in one country. For some reason our German cousins were not satisfied with a meagre 54.5% ABV rum and demanded more so this 75% ABV expression was launched for the German market only.  Thanks to the guys at Beers of Europe I was able to obtain a bottle for £49.99.  Which sounds quite expensive but once I’ve explained exactly how this 75% ABV rum SHOULD be drank you will see I wasn’t stung too badly.
