Admiral’s Old J Cherry Spiced

Admiral's Old J Cherry Spiced Rum Review by the fat rum pirateAdmiral’s Old J Cherry Spiced. Admiral’s Old J or simply Old J as it is more commonly known, is a brand of Spiced Rum popular in the UK. It was introduced initially to fill the “void”, when Sailor Jerry changed their popular UK “formula” to the one more widely available, to the US market and beyond. Hence the Old J – though they never mention a Jerry. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Virgin Gorda 1493 Spanish Heritage Rum Review by the fat rum pirateVirgin Gorda 1493 Spanish Heritage Rum. Virgin Gorda is a rum brand from London. The rum is produced and distributed by The Poshmakers

I have to confess prior to trying this rum I had not heard of The Poshmakers and their other brands (two gins and a vodka) aren’t familiar to me. Maybe they just haven’t reached us up here in the Frozen North. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Bumbu The Original

Bumbu The Original Rum Review by the fat rum pirateBumbu The Original. Bumbu is an Indonesian word for a blend of spices. I’m sure I have also seen terms such as Bombo and Bumbu, used to describe mixed drinks made by Pirates and other historical figures. These drinks have been composed of rum, water and varying spices.

This rum has proved to be very popular over the past couple of years. It has also proved to be very controversial. Bumbu The Original titles itself as The Craft Rum. They note that their rum, which is “hand crafted” using 8 different sugar cane varieties is aged for up to 15 years. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Plantation Haiti XO rum review by the fat rum pirate 2Plantation Haiti XO.  A Single Cask bottling for the Mercury Bar.  The Mercury Bar is a bar/restaurant in London W4 as far as I am aware anyway.  It could be a number of other places all around the world.  Until I’m told otherwise I’ll stick with the one in London.

Plantation Haiti XO is a rum from (I presume) Haitian distillery Barbancourt.  It was aged for 8 years in the tropical climate of Hait in ex-bourbon casks.  It was then transferred to France where it was aged for a further 3 years in White Pineau “Ferrand” casks.  White Pineau is a French Fortified Wine. Ron Cartavio Anejo

Ron Cartavio Anejo Rum Review by the fat rum pirateRon Cartavio Anejo. I picked this bottling from Peruvian rum producer Cartavio up in Mallorca. Hence the more “exotic” looking photo. This photo was definitely not taken in sunny Sunderland!

Ron Cartavio Anejo is the entry level aged rum in the Cartavio line up. This was quite an old dusty bottle and it set me back the princely sum of 10 Euros.  In the UK a bottle of this would set me back around £22-25 for a 70cl.  It is bottled at a fairly uninspiring 38% ABV.
