Watt Rum Belize Rum Distilled at Travellers Distillery Aged 13 Years. One of my earliest disappointments in the rum world hailed from Belize. At the time paying over £30 for a bottle of rum was quite a big deal for me. I’m still not 100% sure why I opted for the bottle of One Barrel Rum.
The Colours of Rum Trinidad 1998. Whilst the Independent Bottler of this rum may be fairly new, stocks of 1998 Caroni Rum have been circulating for a while. It’s probably one of the most released vintages, particularly over the past few years.
You’ll find that most of these Caroni 1998 bottlings will have been at least partially aged here in Europe rather than in Trinidad or the Tropics. Which is partly why such bottlings are able to be aged for so long. There are a number of things to consider when ageing spirits. However, whilst ageing and maturing rum is important, evaporation has to be considered. No point ageing barrels of rum for years and years to come back and find you’ve barely anything left……
Lost Years Navy Strength Rum. There’s been quite an explosion of branded, blended rum brands coming out of the UK in recent years. For a long while all we had where the old “favourites” such as Lamb’s and Captain Morgan.
That has definitely changed. Brands such as The Duppy Share, Diablesse and Thameside have shown that you can charge slightly more “premium” price for a superior quality blend.
Dead Reckoning Rum Mutiny South Pacific. Another bottling from new Independent bottlers Dead Reckoning. If you aren’t familiar with the brand it is likely because you aren’t living in Australia. Unlike many Independent bottlers Dead Reckoning aren’t based in Europe (or even the US which has seen more Indie bottlers sprout up lately).
Merser & Co. Rum Merchants Double Barrel. Blended rum has long been well established at the lower end of the rum market. Most supermarkets have their own blends and many “cheaper” brands are based around blends of Caribbean rum. In recent times many blends have changed from multi island blends to single island blends.
Black Tot Rum Last Consignment British Royal Naval Rum. This is the fourth release from Elixir Distillers in their “Black Tot” series that I have reviewed. It was, however the first one they released. Pretty much as long as I started to get quite serious about rum I’ve known about this mythical (and expensive) bottling.
Jamaican Rum JHK Thompson Bros. Independent Whisky Bottlers have a long tradition of putting out some rather decent rum over the years. In fact quite a few of the most respected “Independent Bottlers” of rum are primarily Whisky bottlers.
Names such as Silver Seal, Cadenhead’s and Duncan Taylor are well known and well established. However, over the past few years as more Whisky enthusiasts are beginning to discover rum – more and more “Whisky” bottlers are turning to rum.
