Elements Eight – for so long the brand was identifiable by its very tall, sleek bottles and distinctive framed logo.
Moving with the times Elements Eight CEO Carl Stephenson decided to celebrate their 10th Anniversary with a re-boot. Hence the re-designed “dumpy” bottles. The logo remains but these newly designed bottles are much easier to store.
Dead Man’s Fingers is a Spiced Rum. First released in 2015 by The Rum and Crab Shack, St Ives, Cornwall. Initially the rum was only available in the bar/restaurant (which has since expanded to another branch in Exeter). It is now pushing for a national release and is already available from a number of UK online retailers.
Black Magic is a new Spiced rum to the UK market. It is imported from the US by Hi Spirits Ltd and produced in Louisville, Kentucky by Sazerac.
Sazerac are better known for their Rye Whiskey. Which is produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, in Frankfort. Where the rum in this blend is distilled I do not know. The website for Black Magic states only that the rum is a blend of young and aged rums.
Elements Eight rums are quite visible in the UK marketplace. Several more upmarket department stores stock the brand and it can be found in many style and cocktail bars.
Presentation wise that’s not really surprising as the tall square, high shouldered bottles are very pleasing on the eye. They are however less pleasing on the shelves. You will find they are a lot taller than most spirits bottles – which can make them a bit of a pain to store. So it’s probably just as well that they have recently re-launched their rums with new packaging. They have also decided to drop this offering.
Captain Morgan along with Bacardi probably gets the most abuse of all the rum companies. It is part of drinks giant Diageo’s portfolio of brands and is one of the most recognised throughout the world.
Whilst the companies Jamaica (or Dark) rum really isn’t worthy of too much criticism (it’s decidedly average), like Bacardi the strange flavoured rums the group have released, particularly over the pond are never going to win them many fans amongst rum conisseurs or purists.
Most supermarkets in the UK have their own brand spirits. Marks and Spencer (or M&S for short), however do not do anything by halves.
So rather than trot out just a standard white and dark Caribbean rum, they have actually got some pretty interesting rums on their shelves.
The M&S Bajan Estate XO and Guatemalan Plantation rums have both been uncovered as being supplied by Cognac Ferrand’s rum blending wing Plantation Rum. The information on this bottle which states the rum is produced and bottled in France leads me to believe that this Gingerbread flavoured offering is also from Plantation Rum. NB – Since writing this review I have been informed by Nick Rodgers who works alongside Cognac Ferrand and Plantation Rum that is not a product produced by Plantation.
In 2012 following the loss of the rights for Cockspur Rum back in 2010, Blavod Wines and Spirits introduced a new spiced rum to the market – Red Leg Spiced Rum. Please note at this stage the official way to title this rum is to keep the Red and the Leg together (But with the L still capitalised) – RedLeg. However for purposes of people searching the web for this I figured it best to keep it separate on the title etc.
