Ron Zacapa XO Centenario Solera Gran Reserva Especial

Ron Zacapa XO Rum review by the fat rum pirateRon Zacapa XO is the “super premium” addition to the regular Ron Zacapa range.  There are many others yearly variations on the rum but this one along with the Sistema Solera 23 has been available for a number of years now.

I’m sure we are all aware of the marketing and the awards Ron Zacapa have won over the years.  Not to mention the criticism the brand has come in for due to the sugar additions to their rums.  Zacapa holds the accolade of being widely recognised as “one of the best rums in the world” on one hand whilst seen as the devil itself by many within the rum community. Flor De Cana Gran Reserva 7

Flor De Cana 7 Gran Reserva rum review by the fat rum pirateNicaraguan rum producers Compania Licorera De Nicaragua S.A have been “slow ageing” their “Tradicion Artesenal”  Flor De Cana rum since 1890 in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua.

Sometime in 2014 they decided to change the labelling throughout their range.  The age statements were removed and the conspiracies began…….. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

FAIR 10 Year Old Rum

FAIR 10 Year Old Rum Review by the fat rum pirateFAIR Spirits are the first line of socially responsible spirits, so the tagline on their website goes.

This 10 year old rum hails from Belize a Central American country which shares it eastern shoreline with the Caribbean sea.  I have reviewed a couple of rums previously from Belize.  One bottled directly by their largest rum operation Travellers and one which was produced for a third party – much like this FAIR rum. Pyrat Pistol

Pyrat Pistol Rum Review by the fat rum piratePatron’s Pyrat XO Reserve is perhaps one of the most controversial rums on the planet.  Derided by many as little more than an orange flavour liqueur it still sells by the bucketload all around the world.

Pyrat XO Reserve offends people on many different levels.  Not only does the orange flavour gain criticism from those in hope of a more authentic rum its over the top packaging and garish orange box serves only to fuel people’s ire towards this rum.  Then of course is the little matter of the added sugar and the desecrating of what was at one point a very decent rum (when it was called Planter’s Punch and not owned by Patron – this is not my words just want I have noted online so don’t quote me!), which all adds upto it being the Marmite of rum. Cacique Ron Anejo Superior

Cacique Anejo Rum Review by the fat rum pirate Cacique (which means leader of the tribe in Spanish) is the top selling rum brand in its homeland Venezuela.  This news may come as a surprise to those more familiar with Venezuelan rums such as Pampero and Diplomatico.  What shouldn’t come as any surprise is that Cacique has the marketing power of Diageo behind it. Penny Blue XO Single Estate Mauritian Rum (4th Batch)

Penny Blue XO Rum Review by the fat rum pirateMauritian Rum is a new one on me.  I have in the past tried Pink Pigeon Spiced Rum.  Penny Blue hails from the same distillery as Pink Pigeon – The Medine Distillery.  However, Penny Blue promises an altogether more sophisticated and grown up experience.

Regulars readers of the blog may be familiar with the press release I placed on the site a couple of weeks back.  By way of thanks for promoting this venture (which is done in conjunction with the wonderfull Berry Bros and Rudd) I was sent a sample of the 4th batch of this Single Estate Mauritian Rum. Gosling’s Family Reserve Old Rum

Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum review by the fat rum pirateGosling’s don’t tend to rush their releases or have many lines in their portfolio.  Until recently their only rum commercially available was the Black Seal and the Black Seal Overproof.

In recent times Gosling’s have introduced a Gold Rum and finally got around to releasing this well guarded Family Secret.  I quite enjoyed both the Black Seal and the Gold rum so I felt it only fair to review their more premium offering as well. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
