Castelo Branco Aguardente de Cana. Castelo Branco (White Castle) are a cachaca producer from Goias State. The brand is owned by Luiz Mantiega Alvares de Campos Filho.
It was formed in 1946 when Luiz’s grandfather who moved to Goias from Abaete set up a distillery using a 500 litre Alembic Copper Pot Still, from Minas Gerais. As well as being the owner of Castelo Branco Luiz is also the President of the Goiana Association of Cachaça Alembic Producers – AGOPCAL,
Cachaca Santo Grau Itirapua. The Santo Grau brand brings together 3 different sugar mills/distilleries for its range of artisanal cachaca. The cachaca I am reviewing today is one the three signature bottlings from each of those distilleries.
It is also closely related to the previous Santo Grau cachaca I reviewed as it comes from the same small distillery in Sao Paulo state Itirapua.
Magnifica de Faria Bica do Alambique. This may be a brand you are familiar with if you live in the UK and have dined at Las Iguanas in the past. Last year I reviewed the white Magnifica de Faria Tradicional, which is available at Iguanas both to drink in cocktails or neat in the restaurant. You can also buy a bottle to take home.
Cachaca Patua de Alambique Carvalho. Cachaca Patua was founded by Cachaca Conoisseur Walter Carlos Brossel, in 2017. The distillery is situated in Betim a city in Minas Gerais State. The birthplace of cachaca.
Cachaca Patua produced their cachaca from estate grown sugar cane. Like all truly artisanal cachaca producers they distill in small batches on traditional Copper Pot Stills. At present Cachaca Patua produce 25,000 litres of cachaca per year which is spread across their 4 expressions. That said the Patua Reserva Especial only has 400 bottles produced per year.
Cachaca Sebastiana Duas Barricas Quatro Anos. Hailing from the Alambique Santa Rufina, Rodovia, Sao Paulo state. The brand Sebastiana is fairly recent to the market but the distillery has been operational over 60 years.
Prior to the release of the Sebastiana brand in 2014, the distillery produced (and still does) Cachaca Faceira. It was the second generation of cachaca producers in the Mattos family who decided to enter what they term as the “Super Premium” cachaca market.
Arborea Blend Amburana e Carvalho. Arborea are a cachaca brand which hails from Pirapetinga, Minas Gerais. The south eastern state of Minas Gerais is perhaps the most well known cachaca producing state in all of Brasil. A number of high quality and long established cachaca distilleries and brands are synonymous with Minas Gerais.
Novo Fogo Silver Cachaca. As I continue my journey into the world of cachaca I am encountering a few cachaca brands which are more geared for the export market, rather than the huge domestic market in Brasil.
One such brand is Novo Fogo. I have previously reviewed a couple of their expressions a Barrel Aged cachaca and their Tanager blend. Both were pretty good. So having taken some time out to sort out my samples boxes into some kind of order I dug into my cachaca box and came out with Novo Fogo Silver. So we’ll give it a spin today.
