Top Ten Rums……So Far

The site is now over 3 years old.  The site as it appears now was “re-booted” back in December 2014. Which was pretty much when it began getting a meaningful amount of views. We’ve now reviewed over 300 different rums, with many more in the pipeline.  Out of curiosity I thought I would see how many rums I have given the 5 star treatment. The search was quite interesting.  I was quite surprised by some of the omissions – only garnering 4 or 4.5 stars.  I’ve also tried not to flood the list with rums from the same distillery to keep a bit of variety. Watson’s Trawler Rum

Watson's Trawler Rum review by the fat rum pirateWatson’s Trawler Rum is another dark navy style rum from “up north”.  Scotland has a real tradition when it comes to rum.  Many famous Independent bottlers such as obvious ones like Cadenhead’s and Duncan Taylor age their rums in Scotland.  Surprisingly for some, Italian bottlers such as Samaroli and Silver Seal also age their rums up there. Kill Devil Jamaica Long Pond 15 Year Old

Kill Devil Jamaica Long Pond Rum Review by the fat rum pirateHere we have another independent bottling by Kill Devil (Hunter Laing) of Jamaica Rum from the Long Pond Distillery.  Over the past year I have become more familiar with rums from the Long Pond distillery.

Rums such as Expressions by Old Man Rum Co. have an element of aged Pot Still rum from the Long Pond distillery and I also purchases a Duncan Taylor bottling from Long Pond shortly before Christmas 2016.  Which turned out to be one of the best rums I have ever tasted. Cadenhead’s JMWP Worthy Park Distillery Aged 11 Years

Cadenhead's Jamaica Worthy Park JMWP Rum review by the fat rum pirate

This is a Jamaican Rum from Worthy Park – hence the JMWP (JaMaica Worthy Park).  Worthy Park only re-opened and began distilling rum again in 2005 so this is a bottling which comes from their first year of production.

Cadenhead’s have been bottling rum for quite some time now.  They release a number of rums at 46% ABV as part of their Green Label series.  For the more serious rum drinker they also have their Cask Strength Dated Distillation series.  Which this bottlings is a part of. Blackadder Raw Cask – Finest Jamaica Hampden Rum Aged 15 Years

Blackadder let’Blackadder Hampden Estate 15 Rum Review by the fat rum pirare raw casks be honest about things.  It’s in your head and in its my head.  No doubt it gets into the head of everyone who ever buys a Blackadder Whisky or Rum and is familiar with BBC comedy.

I don’t even know whether there is any connection between the Rowan Atkinson series and this Independent bottler.  Appearance wise I am certainly getting a feel of “The Black Adder” which was the first (very different) series of the popular comedy.  My recollections come mainly from the 2nd and 3rd incarnations.  And yes that bloody ludicrous folky theme tune……… Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

An Interview with Dave Broom – Author of Rum

Interview with Dave Broom the fat rum pirateIn the Rum world Dave Broom is famous for his coffee table opus “Rum” which is a staple publication for most rum enthusiasts.  I myself have been influenced in particular by the reviews contained in the book.
