Rum of the Year 2016

the fat rum pirate rum of the year 2016 review blogger rum awardIn a world dominated by click bait “lists” we will keep things very simple.  Each year we will award ONE rum as our Rum of the Year.

The rum which will be crowned as Rum of the Year must have been released that year.  It also must be commercially available to the average rum consumer.  Any rums which were available prior to 2016 are ineligible.  Likewise any bottlings that were extremely limited or are unavailable as of today are also out. Foursquare Rum Distillery 2006

Velier Foursquare 2006 Rum Review by the fat rum pirateFoursquare 2006. The first collaboration between Velier and Foursquare Distillery, Barbados.  This will certainly not be the last.  With Velier no longer issuing their acclaimed aged Demerara rums from DDL, Luca Gargano has began sourcing rum from other distilleries to release under the Velier banner. Kill Devil Barbados 9 Year Old

Kill Devil Barbados 2007 9 year old rum review by the fat rum pirateAnother rum from the Kill Devil Single Cask range.  This time hailing from Barbados.  This bottling is identified as being from the Foursquare Distillery.

Due to a surge in releases and activity over the past 12-18 months.  We have featured a number of Foursquares releases.  It is likely that their key releases would have been reviewed as a matter of course, even if they weren’t as good as they are.  Had I not enjoyed them as much as I did it is unlikely we would have featured as many Independent bottlings. Please note there are more to come as well. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Berrys’ Barbados Rum Aged 12 Years

Berry's Barbados Rum review by the fat rum pirateBerrys’ or Berrys’ Bros and Rudd to give them their full name are an English Independent bottler of wines and spirits.  They are also one of London’s leading wine and spirits retailers with the same premises at 3 St James Street London since 1698.

They have a wide and ever changing range of aged rums from all around the globe.  I was fortunate enough to pick up this rather dusty bottling from a few years ago at a very reasonable £39.95. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Rum of the Year 2015

Rum of the Year The Fat Rum PirateRum of the Month has been a feature which we ran on the site from January to October. Rum of the Year 2015 its logical conclusion.

Rum of the Month gave a solid selection of 10 very good rums, which I hope people took the time to seek out if they hadn’t already tried them.

Which led me to one of the sticking points I had about producing a list of Rums of the Year.  As the site has only been live since early 2014 and only really getting a noticeable amount of hits since the December 2014 re-vamp, it seemed a little daft for me to recommend a list of rums.  A lot of you have probably been buying these rums for years and years. R L Seale’s 10 Year Old Barbados Rum

R L Seale's 10 Year Old Barbados RumWhat’s that? Is usually the refrain I hear from my less rum orientated visitors (most people to be honest, unfortunately).  My reply is that it is a bottle of fine Bajan Rum is often met with a rather dismissive shake of the head.

For those who aren’t aware R L Seale’s 10 Year Old Rum is produced by Richard Seale at the wonderful Foursquare Distillery in Barbados.  Richard is the great-grandson of Reginald Leon Seale who founded the company in 1926. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
