Plantation 3 Stars Artisanal Rum

Plantation 3 stars rum review by the fat rum piratePlantation 3 Stars is a white rum from the French based bottling giant Plantation .  The name is coined from the 3 “stars” of the Caribbean from which the rum is obtained.  Namely Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad.  As with most of the Plantation rums there is no age statement.

White rum hasn’t featured a great deal on the site so far.  This is something I am trying to address.  Whilst white rum is often seen as mixing rum for cocktails such as the Daiquiri and the Mojito, I have noted that this and the El Dorado 3 Years Cask Aged have received favourable reviews by other reviewers. Mount Gay Extra Old Reserve Cask Rum

Mount Gay Extra OldMount Gay Extra Old or XO as they seem to have re-branded it.  For those in the know Mount Gay Extra Old is often known as MGXO.  The XO notation on the Mount Gay is pretty standard across the rum and spirits industry to denote an aged spirit (without actually noting how old it is!).

As the Mount Gay Distillery is the oldest official distillery in the world established 1703 as the label denotes, I don’t think we need to worry too much about the heritage and authenticity of the contents of this Extra Old rum. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

R L Seale’s 10 Year Old Barbados Rum

R L Seale's 10 Year Old Barbados RumWhat’s that? Is usually the refrain I hear from my less rum orientated visitors (most people to be honest, unfortunately).  My reply is that it is a bottle of fine Bajan Rum is often met with a rather dismissive shake of the head.

For those who aren’t aware R L Seale’s 10 Year Old Rum is produced by Richard Seale at the wonderful Foursquare Distillery in Barbados.  Richard is the great-grandson of Reginald Leon Seale who founded the company in 1926. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Pusser’s Rum British Navy (40% ABV)

imageMuch to my uncontrollable excitement Pusser’s Rum Ltd, recently re-vamped (and to be fair tidied up) their range of rums.  This was done partly to introduce new expressions but also to avoid confusion caused by the numerous “Blue Label” versions on offer in varying territories. Doorly’s XO Fine Old Barbados Rum

DOORLY'S XO RUM REVIEW BARBADOS SEALE BAJANDoorly’s XO Fine Old Barbados Rum.  From the house of Martin Doorly no less.  None the wiser? No me neither.  The rum is produced by R. L. Seale at the wonderful Foursquare Distillery.  So what does this Doorly fellow have to do with it exactly?

Well, in 1906 the Rum Duty Act was passed and this caused considerable changes to how rum was distributed in Barbados.  The new law meant that distilleries had to obtain a licence and could only sell rums in bulk.  Many of the distillers became bottlers instead. Of these Martin Doorly & Co.  The growth of branded names began and Martin Doorly evolved into Doorly Macaw Rum and became the first bottled rum to be exported from the island. Bacardi 8 – Ron Bacardi 8 Anos

Bacardi 8 Rum ReviewBacardi 8 rum was the “sole preserve of the Bacardi family for over one hundred and thirty years” it is a “unique blend of the finest Bacardi Rums matured for no less than eight years”.  Whilst the first part of the of the statement may be slightly fanciful the second part indicates to me that ALL the rum in the bottle is at least 8 years old.  Still this hasn’t stopped the Bacardi Bashers and the Rum Conspiracy Theorists (there are some absolute crackers to be found online) from suggesting otherwise……. Cockspur Fine Rum

imageIn 1884 Danish sailor Valdemar Hanschell created Cockspur rum in Barbados.  The rum has been an integral part of island life ever since.  Cockspur is distilled using, what at the time was considered a revolutionary continuous still, along with more traditional pot stills.  Cockspur Fine Rum is the companies flagship brand.  In most territories outside of Barabos it is to be found alongside their 12 year old rum (Cockspur 12/VSOR) and the companies more recent spiced variant (Cockspur Spiced).  More information and background on the Cockspur brand is available at http://cockspurrum.com/home.
