Kill Devil Guyana Aged 11 Years – Port Ellen Finish. In all honesty, looking over my notes I thought I had reviewed more Guyanese rum from Kill Devil, than I actually have. It seems a lot of my Kill Devil reviews have been from Hampden Estate, Jamaica.
Anyway back to Guyana we are. This is another Single Cask and Cask Strength rum from Kill Devil. Kill Devil for those who aren’t in the know is the rum branch of Hunter Laing, who are more famous for their independent whisky bottlings.
The Duchess Guyana Rum Aged 28 Years. The Duchess are completing their “Flower Series” of rums, complete with bottle design by Dutch artist Hans Dillesse, with their oldest rum to date.
Here we have a 28 year old rum from Guyana. More specifically here we have a rum bottled in 1990 at the now defunct Enmore Distillery. The rum was distilled on the Versailles Wooden Pot Still which by 1990 had moved to Enmore, before ending up at the Diamond Distillery (DDL).
Four Bells Finest Old Navy Rum. In order to celebrate Black Tot Day, I’ve cracked open another old miniature I had in the collection. Kept especially for days like this. Fortunately, in this instance I also have a full size (75cl) bottle in the collection as well.
I’ve done a bit of research on these bottlings and with the use of the old style UK proof and the newer metric ABV on the bottle, I have worked out this is likely to be from the 1970’s. Though sadly I can’t be much more exact.
That Boutique-y Rum Company Diamond Dsitillery (Versailles Still) 13 Year Old. This particular bottling, was one of the first releases by the Boutique-y Rum Company. As a result I am quite surprised that it is still available. Maybe this review might help sell the last few bottles? If it’s positive, of course and if anyone listens to me…….
El Dorado Rare Collection Albion 2004. Guyanese rum powerhouses Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) caused a bit of a stir in the rum world a few years back when they first released their “Rare Collection” rums.
It is more than a little odd that the actual distillery and producers of Demerara rum, released in the 2000’s and 2010’s are not the ones who take the credit for the best bottlings.
El Dorado Rare Collection Skeldon 2000. The only rums I have seen in my rum “career” that denote Skeldon are the Velier 1973 and 1978 releases. Which are long gone except for those with very deep pockets. As any rum blogger will attest researching Demerara Rums is on the most complicated and time-consuming pursuits. Excellent work by the likes of Marco Freyr of Barrel Aged Mind have helped with this. I will once again recommend reading his huge article on The Demerara Distillieries.
