Duncan Taylor Single Cask Rum – St Lucia 11 Year Old (Cask 5)

Duncan Taylor 11 Year Rum Review by the fat rum pirateDuncan Taylor are primarily an Independent Scotch Whisky bottler, whom like Wm Cadenhead also dip their toes in the rum market.

Formed in 1938 the company transformed itself from a broker of whisky casks to distilleries and Independent bottlers, to producing and marketing their own brand bottlings. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Rumbullion!

imageWell, Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s Rumbullion! to give it its full name.  Rumbullion is a Spiced Rum made exclusively for Master of Malt as part of their Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s range of spirits and pre-mixed cocktails.

Rumbullion! has been so popular with Master of Malt punters that it is also now available in an XO (15 year old) and Navy Strength variation.  This review focuses on the “traditional” standard Rumbullion. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

English Harbour 1981 25 Year Old

English Harbour 1981 Rum Review by the fat rum pirateEnglish Harbour rums are produced by Antigua Distillers on the Caribbean Island of the same name.  English Harbour is a port on the island.  Its name was given by the Royal British Navy when they set up a naval base there in the 18th century.

Outside of the Caribbean, Antigua Distillers are best recognised for their English Harbour rums.  The 5 year old is regularly held up as being a classic (I didn’t share that view in my review though).  Within the Caribbean they are best known for their Cavalier brand of rums.  Less expensive rums used mostly for mixing.  Much like St Lucia Distillers produce Bounty for their own domestic and more localised market. Captain Morgan White Rum

Captain Morgan White Rum review by the fat rum pirateI can almost feel the condemnation as I write.  A review of another of Diageo’s Captain Morgan offerings.  However, before you do so, please note this is a white rum not one of the many Spiced Variants which have given the Captain such a bad name in recent years.

A White Rum from the Captain Morgan brand has been available on and off for some time.  Dependent on the territories you have visited and/or your geographical location and time spent enjoying rum, you may have come across a White Captain rum in the past. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Appleton Special Jamaica Rum

Appleton Special Jamaica Rum review by the fat rum pirateFrom what I understand Appleton Special isn’t widely available in a lot of territories.  It is freely available in the UK though.

Rather than being special as such, it is Appleton’s entry level rum.  It comes in both a Gold and White expression.  It should be noted that whilst this is an Appleton rum it doesn’t have the Appleton Estate moniker.  Yes, its of course from the same distillery but it seems Appleton wish to make a distinction between this and the Estate’s entry level rum – V/X.  It is notably absent from the Appleton Estate website and rumours have it that it may be being discontinued.  If those rumours are true I may have to invest in a few more bottles soon! Red Leg Spiced Rum

Red Leg Spiced Rum reivew by the fat rum pirateIn 2012 following the loss of the rights for Cockspur Rum back in 2010, Blavod Wines and Spirits introduced a new spiced rum to the market – Red Leg Spiced Rum.  Please note at this stage the official way to title this rum is to keep the Red and the Leg together (But with the L still capitalised) – RedLeg.  However for purposes of people searching the web for this I figured it best to keep it separate on the title etc. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Gosling’s Family Reserve Old Rum

Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum review by the fat rum pirateGosling’s don’t tend to rush their releases or have many lines in their portfolio.  Until recently their only rum commercially available was the Black Seal and the Black Seal Overproof.

In recent times Gosling’s have introduced a Gold Rum and finally got around to releasing this well guarded Family Secret.  I quite enjoyed both the Black Seal and the Gold rum so I felt it only fair to review their more premium offering as well. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
