Compagnie des Indes are a French based Independent bottler. This Barbados offering is aged for 16 Years. The distillate hails from the acclaimed Foursquare Distillery in St Philip.
Compagnie des Indes (East India Company) is the brainchild of Florent Beuchet. Florent previously worked as the US Brand Ambassador for the Joseph Banks rum brand. You may be familiar with their 5 and 7 Island blends. They have also released some more expensive and very limited single cask rums.
Foursquare Rum Distillery should need little or no introduction. Over the past few years alone, the distillery has released a number of new innovative rums.
These new rums compliment and expand upon the existing classics in the Foursquare repertoire.
Thanks to importer Marussia Beverages, the UK has been treated to a number of new releases in the past couple of months. Some have been unexpected such as the Doorly’s 8 Year Old (review coming soon). Others such as this rum, very much anticipated and eagerly received!
Berrys’ or Berrys’ Bros and Rudd to give them their full name are an English Independent bottler of wines and spirits. They are also one of London’s leading wine and spirits retailers with the same premises at 3 St James Street London since 1698.
They have a wide and ever changing range of aged rums from all around the globe. I was fortunate enough to pick up this rather dusty bottling from a few years ago at a very reasonable £39.95.
Foursquare Rum Distillery St Philip, Barbados. For many people Barbados is the birthplace of rum. Which is handy because in the Richard Seale Foursquare have one of the most vocal rum producers.
Passionately against additives and very much against the more secretive side of the rum world Richard is currently involved with Luca Gargano of Velier in educating and trying to push through new classifications of rum.
The Rockley Still from which this Bristol Classic Rum takes its name is quite a mythical creature.
Fortunately for me it has been explored in great detail by Nikos Arvantis and published over at Steve James’ Rum Diaries Blog.
Bristol Classic Rum have released a good few variations of this Rockley Still 1986 distillate over the years. This bottling is a Sherry Finish and more specifically an Oloroso Sherry finish.
The Rum Swedes Barbados 2000 hails from the West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD) who are responsible for the Cockspur brand.
The Rum Swedes brand is part of Svenksa Eldvatten (Swedish Firewater). They are independent bottlers of Whisky, Rum and Gin. Ran by Tommy Andersen and Peter Sjögren,who both have a long history with Scotch Whisky.
In 1920, when prohibition began, Captain Bill McCoy made a name for himself as America’s first “Rum Runner”. He always delivered the finest quality rum which became known around the world as “The Real McCoy”.
I’ve no idea how true this is. I’ve every confidence if I trawl the internet I will find various different stories about the origins of the term “The Real McCoy”. In the UK a popular crisp brand are term the “Real McCoy’s”.
