Iceberg Gold Rum

imageIceberg is a rum which hails from Canada.  Well the brand does anyway, unsurprisingly the actual rum in the bottle is not Canadian.

It is in fact a Demerara rum which is blended with “12,000 year old Iceberg water”.  Yeah okay anything you say!  It is bottled by the Canadian Iceberg Vodka Company.  It has made its way into my home here in the UK via Vikingstad in Norway where AST import it from Canada. Don Q Anejo

Don Q Anejo rum review by the fat rum pirateDon Q Anejo is one of the two more “premium” rums available in the UK from Puerto Rican producers Serralles. The Don Q brand has recently been re-vamped and they are actively trying to get a foothold in the UK market, which is currently dominated by another Puerto Rican concern – Bacardi and brands from Diageo such as Captain Morgan. Don Q Gold

DON Q GOLD rum review by the fat rum pirateDon Q Gold along with Don Q Cristal are the entry level rums from rum producer Serralles.

Don Q hails from Puerto Rico, which is perhaps most famous in the rum world for being where Bacardi defected to at the time of the Cuban Revolution.

Don Q as a brand began in 1934 and yes, it is named after Don Quixote.  This family ran concern has over 150 years of rum making experience, making its first rum sales in 1865.  The Serralles family are currently in their sixth generation of rum making and are headed up by Felix J Serralles Jr.  The family originally arrived in Puerto Rico around 1820 and Juan Sebastian Serralles set up the Hacienda Teresa – a sugar cane plantation. Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Rum

Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Rum will be for many the top of the tree in terms of Appleton tasting.

With the Appleton Estate 21 Year Old coming in (depending on how savvy you shop), at just over £100, the 30 Year Old now largely unavailable and the Exclusive only available at the Appleton Distillery, it is unlikely many will make the jump from a £100 rum to the next readily available rum.  The 50 Year Old.  The £3500 price tag will put off most of you reading this review. Westerhall Plantation Rum

Westerhall Plantation Rum Review by the fat rum pirateWesterhall Estate was once a bustling hive of sugar and rum production on the island of Grenada.  Nowadays the Estate offers a visitors centre to remind visitors of the rum and sugar production of the past.

Rum is still produced under the Westerhall Estate brand.  However, it is no longer rum made from native sugar cane, not is it made from rum distilled on the island.  Westerhall’s rums are made from rum imported from Trinidad, bottled and blended on the island. Westerhall Estate Jack Iron

Jack Iron Rum Review by the fat rum pirateWesterhall Estate Jack Iron Rum is a lightly coloured overproof rum from Grenada.

Distillation of rum at Westerhall Estate no longer takes place.  Instead rum is imported from the Angostura Distillery in Trinidad.  It is then blended and bottled at what remains of the Westerhall Estate.

The Estate acts more as a bottling plant and visitor centre now.  It is sad that so many distilleries no longer produce their own rums but unfortunately like so many smaller distillers – competing with the big hitters is proving increasingly difficult. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
