  • Chairmans Reserve Finest St Lucia Rum

Chairman’s Reserve Finest St Lucia Rum

    Bythefatrumpirate March 3, 2014August 17, 2015

Chairmans ReserveThis is without the doubt the most difficult rum review I have done so far. When I first got into rum this was the first rum I bought online.

Confused by all the information available on the Internet and still with little understanding of dark, golden, demerara, pot still, column still, agricole (god help us) etc I decided to try a bottle of Chairman’s Reserve. I’m still at a loss as to exactly why I decided to try this particular rum. Was it the unusual dumpy bottle? The mostly positive reviews? The price? The awards? Was I drunk? Who knows I really cannot remember…… Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

  • Bundaberg Original UP Rum

    Bundaberg Original UP Rum

Bundaberg Original Bundy Rum ReviewBundaberg or “Bundy” as its more popularly known in its native Australia is that particular nation’s most famous spirit drink.  It is available in a variety of guises and the Bundaberg company even makes its own Cola for its pre-mixed cans and bottles.

I’d seen this rum a lot when I was in Australia on holiday a few years back.  However, I wasn’t into rum back then so I never gave it a try. Since becoming more interested in rum I’d seen the rum online a few times at around £20-25.  I finally thought I’d give it a try. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

  • Special Sang Som Rum

    Special Sang Som Rum

    Bythefatrumpirate March 3, 2014July 13, 2015

Sang Som Special Rum ThailandI bought this when I decided to order some rums that I would normally completely overlook.  I figured that for the time being I’d probably tried enough Bajan and Navy style rums.  It was time to expand my horizons and see what else was available.

I figured I would try this Thai rum as it wasn’t too expensive and being from Thailand it definitely wasn’t going to be a Caribbean rum. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

  • Pusser's Rum British Navy (54.5%) | Pusser's Rum Gunpowder Proof (54.5%)

Pusser’s Rum British Navy (54.5% ABV)

    Bythefatrumpirate March 3, 2014March 15, 2016

Pusser's British Navy Rum Review Guyana DemeraraPusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (it has recently been re-branded in the UK) is as near to the rum issued to sailors in the British Navy as you will get.  The “tot” was abolished in 1970.  Black Tot Day as it was called being 31 July 1970.

The rum is steeped in tradition and the website is very “naval” as is the packaging.  It’s very distinctive and slightly (IMO) gaudy.  However you do get a nice corked closure, which I always prefer.  You don’t get any fancy cardboard packaging with this rum just the bottle.  The rum hasn’t hit the supermarkets over here as yet.  This surprises me somewhat but it has found its way into most independent retailers.  The rum retails at around the £30 mark.  This seems a little expensive for a Navy Rum but it is 54.5% abv so it should last a bit longer. El Dorado Cask Aged 5 Years Demerara Rum

    Bythefatrumpirate March 3, 2014July 13, 2015

El Dorado 5 Year Old Demerara Guyana Rum ReviewA younger Demerara rum from the El Dorado range.  I was ordering a consignment of unusual (by country) entry level rums and I noticed this one so I thought I would give it a try.  The rum was reduced to £19.95 online so I thought I as worth a go.  I was a little surprised to walk into Aldi and find the 8 year old variant for £19.99, just a few days later. Did I say surprised? I meant f**king pissed off. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Old Monk Rum India ReviewOld Monk is a dark vatted 7 year old rum from (wait for it…) Utter Pradesh, India.  It was the best selling rum in the world until very recently, despite not advertising at all.  It’s record breaking sales admittedly were overwhelmingly in India where it has been replaced by McDowells No1 Rum as the best seller. Chairman’s Reserve – The Forgotten Casks Finest St Lucia Rum

    Bythefatrumpirate March 3, 2014July 13, 2015

Chairmans Resrve The Fogotten CasksAnother entry from St Lucia Distillers and one with a bit of a story.  On May 2nd 2007 St. Lucia Distillers was struck by a major fire which destroyed their administrative and blending facility. Most of the distillery was spared but they suffered great problems with storage space for their casks. In the melee that followed the cellar master, Mr. Cyril Mangal, was forced to find space for ageing casks in the most unusual places. Having done so the cellar team had a memory lapse and forgot the casks that had been laid down. These casks were discovered recently. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
