Geographic Indications (GIs) are supposed to protect the Identity, Provenance and Production Methods of Rum from specific countries and regions. As GI is often used as a “catch all” term for any kind of Geographical Protection these articles cover all currently recognised Geographical Protections such as AOC, PDO etc.
Here I look at the rules behind them, what they actually mean and how they affect the rum we drink today.
Aside from the first two articles these are a run down of the rules and regulations. They aren’t the most entertaining or humorous articles I have ever written. That is not their intention. I find them useful as a reference point for my reviews and to help influence my purchases. I hope you all find them equally useful.
They aren’t intended as a huge Deep Dive into the Rules and Regulations. They highlight the information which is widely available to the everyday consumer. I do not claim to have any kind of insider knowledge nor have I seen the actual documents relating to the various rules and regulations.
I think they offer a sound base for information though for the average rum consumer. Enjoy!
