Cuban Rum has been in the headlines quite a bit lately due to the news of the Cuban/US embargo being at least partially lifted.
Bristol Classic Rum have also been high on the radar in the Rum World due to a number of new expressions hitting the markets in recent months. Bristol really seem to be expanding into different countries to increase their repetoir of fine rums.

Originally released to commemorate 80 years of rum production by St Lucia Distillers this rum or to be more accurate these rums – as they are all entirely different blends have become something of a flagship rum for St Lucia Distillers.
In the Rum world Dave Broom is famous for his coffee table opus “Rum” which is a staple publication for most rum enthusiasts. I myself have been influenced in particular by the reviews contained in the book.
In addition to his responsibilities as contributing editor of Whisky Magazine and editor in chief of its Japanese sister title, Broom is a columnist and taster for US publication Whisky Advocate, as well as writing for German’s Mixology, China’s Drink! and French magazines Fine Spirits and Ginger.
Bristol Classic Rum are an Independent bottler based unsurprisingly in Bristol, England. Over the years they have released several variations of their 1990 and 1999 Port Morant Demerara rums. NB Port Morant is their spelling error not mine I’m aware it should really be Mourant.
This is the latest release of their 1990 distillate and it comes in the typical red colour scheme. Much like Veliers bottlings they stick to certain colours for rums from a particular still.
Sainsbury’s Golden Rum is a product of Trinidad and more specifically Angostura. Sainsbury’s have long been stockists of Angostura’s 1919 rum.
This rum is aged for 8 years and is the oldest rum Sainsbury’s currently stocks, excluding the 1919. It’s almost as if Angostura have introduced a direct competitor to the store. Which does seem a bit strange.
Diplomatico Ambassador was launched in London, England in 2011. It is currently the most expensive of the various rums available under the Diplomatico brand.
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is regularly cited as being one of the best rums in the world. In all fairness it isn’t really but what it does offer is a soft, easy and very sugary entry into “sipping rums”. Having said that many will stay loyal to rums such as Diplomatico.
Berry’s Bros & Rudd (BBR for short) is London’s oldest and one of its most respected wine and spirits merchants. They have traded from the same shop in St James Street since 1698.
They hold two warrants to supply wines and spirits to the Prince of Wales and the Queen! So if I don’t give this bottle of rum a good review I might end up in the tower….
