What’s that? Is usually the refrain I hear from my less rum orientated visitors (most people to be honest, unfortunately). My reply is that it is a bottle of fine Bajan Rum is often met with a rather dismissive shake of the head.
For those who aren’t aware R L Seale’s 10 Year Old Rum is produced by Richard Seale at the wonderful Foursquare Distillery in Barbados. Richard is the great-grandson of Reginald Leon Seale who founded the company in 1926.
Saint James Royal Ambre is a Rhum Agricole from the French speaking island of Martinique.
For those unfamiliar with Rhum Agricole it is rum made from fresh cane juice as opposed to Rhum Industriel which is produced from molasses or other sugar by products.
The term Rhum Industriel is not widely used as it has negative connotations and those that do produce rhum in this way have no desire or motivation to market their products as such. As most production occurs outside of the French speaking islands it has no real meaning. The term when used in derogative way does Rhum Agricole’s snobbish overpriced reputation little favours.
I’m one of those people with a very short attention span who easily becomes bored or disinterested. Fortunately I’m also one of those people blessed with no fear when it comes to trying new things. If I go the bar for a drink and it’s well stocked with rum you would never guess what I might come back with. If the bar isn’t well stocked with rum the guessing game becomes even more difficult. I love rum but I have plenty of it at home. I don’t always have to drink rum.

A new Caribbean Island for me with this particular rum (not that I’ve visited any yet!). St Vincent Distillers Limited produce Captain Bligh XO Reserve Rum amongst others such as Sparrow’s and Sunset Light Rum.
For those who are unfamiliar Captain (William) Bligh was the in charge of HMS Bounty at the time of the infamous mutiny. He also led a battle against a corrupt rum trade when governor of New South Wales, Australia. His voyages helped establish St Vincent’s botanical gardens also.
Myers’s Rum as recognisable a Dark Rum as Bacardi Superior is a White Rum. World Famous proclaims the bottle and for once this isn’t marketing hype.
Myers’s has been in production since 1879. It is a blend of up to 9 continuous and pot stilled Jamaican rums. It is aged for up to 4 years in small oak barrels. The rum is produced by National Rums of Jamaica Ltd (Long Pond/Monymusk Distilleries) and is bottled by Myers Rum Company in Nassau, Bahamas. The front of the bottle states that is the company which succeeded Fred L Myers of Kingston, Jamaica. The rear of the bottle states that the rum was imported into the UK by Fred L Myers and Son Co. London. The brand overall is owned by beverage powerhouse Diageo.
The wonders of the internet and high street phenomenon Black Friday led me to finally putting a bottle of VAT 19 into my shopping basket. UK based online retailer http://www.drinksupermarket.com had 20% off everything on sale. Drink Supermarket tend to stock less higher end products than most online booze merchants. So I was able to pick up a good few entry and lower level rums. They seem to focus on rum’s they can actually sell…….I’ve had a good few rums with a lot of dust on them from other retailers!
