Lamb’s Navy Rum

Lambs Navy Rum ReviewLamb’s Navy Rum is seen in just about every Supermarket off-license, public house and Working Mens Club (WMC) the length and breadth of England (and quite possible Scotland and Wales too).

Originally created in 1849 from a blend of new fewer than 18 rums from Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica and Guyana by Alfred Lamb.  The rum has been available in the UK pretty much unbroken since 1872.  The rum was originally stored in the famous West India Dock Warehouse just off the Thames.  The rum was then aged for 4 years.  For more information please see the Lamb’s Navy Rum site. Havana Club Anejo 3 Anos

Havana Club White RumHavana Club Anejo 3 Anos (Aged 3 years) is a white rum from the Cuban rum producers.  With news of a possible embargo on Cuban products in the US I felt it a good time to review this staple of the UK and Europe’s style bars.

Distributed in the UK by Pernod-Ricard, Havana Club’s main competition comes from the Puerto Rican powerhoubse Bacardi.  Which is distributed by Bacardi-Brown-Forman.  Oddly I cannot think of many White Rums which have any kind of meaningful presence in the UK other than Havana Club and Bacardi.  To be honest Bacardi has become such a byword for white rum that I doubt many people who drink Bacardi even realise it is rum! Maraska Room

MaraskaRoomNo your eyes do not deceive you.  Along with the outdated Caribbean stereotype so loved by my European cousins we have here a Room rather than a Rum.  From Maraska.

When many folk consider a cruise no doubt they look forward to seeing numerous Caribbean Islands and outposts.  Happy in the knowledge that they will be able to try a smorgasbord of fine high quality rums.  It is a rum lover’s dream indeed. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Ancient Mariner Navy Rum

Ancient Mariner RumAncient Mariner Navy Rum.  To be honest if I had been told such a rum existed I would have immediately expected a very cheap “West Indies” blend of rum.  I would have expected such as rum to have been available in a local convenience store as their own brand rum.  A horribly designed label (complete with sailors and ships) standard cheap bar bottle, awful cheap screw cap and a price tag to match. R L Seale’s 10 Year Old Barbados Rum

R L Seale's 10 Year Old Barbados RumWhat’s that? Is usually the refrain I hear from my less rum orientated visitors (most people to be honest, unfortunately).  My reply is that it is a bottle of fine Bajan Rum is often met with a rather dismissive shake of the head.

For those who aren’t aware R L Seale’s 10 Year Old Rum is produced by Richard Seale at the wonderful Foursquare Distillery in Barbados.  Richard is the great-grandson of Reginald Leon Seale who founded the company in 1926. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Saint James Royal Ambre

Saint James Royal Ambre rum review the fat rum pirateSaint James Royal Ambre is a Rhum Agricole from the French speaking island of Martinique.

For those unfamiliar with Rhum Agricole it is rum made from fresh cane juice as opposed to Rhum Industriel which is produced from molasses or other sugar by products.

The term Rhum Industriel is not widely used as it has negative connotations and those that do produce rhum in this way have no desire or motivation to market their products as such.  As most production occurs outside of the French speaking islands it has no real meaning.  The term when used in derogative way does Rhum Agricole’s snobbish overpriced reputation little favours. Sippin Mulled Caribbean Rum

sippinenchanced3I’m one of those people with a very short attention span who easily becomes bored or disinterested.  Fortunately I’m also one of those people blessed with no fear when it comes to trying new things.  If I go the bar for a drink and it’s well stocked with rum you would never guess what I might come back with.  If the bar isn’t well stocked with rum the guessing game becomes even more difficult.  I love rum but I have plenty of it at home.  I don’t always have to drink rum.
