Rum Bougainville Gold. Bougainville may not be familiar to many of you. It is a brand of rums from the island of Mauritius. Bougainville hails from the Oxenham Distillery. I have featured rums from Mauritius in the past – Penny Blue and Pink Pigeon both of which hailed from the Medine Distillery.

The Pink Pigeon Single Estate Mauritian Vanilla Spiced Rum. That’s quite a mouthful so for the purposes of this review we will review to it as I see it noted in bars etc as just Pink Pigeon or The Pink Pigeon.
Pink Pigeon hails form the Medine Distillery, Mauritius. The Medine Distillery has been gaining a very solid reputation for its Penny Blue range of Single Estate “Pure” rums. They are very proud of being a Single Estate Produce and they are equally clear on the fact they do not permit the use of additives in any of their rums.
Penny Blue VSOP is a rum from the island of Mauritius. The Penny Blue brand so far, have been a range or rather batches of “XO” rums. Each slightly different to the next.
They have also released a more expensive Single Cask Penny Blue and have now produced this VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale – a term used mainly in Cognac marketing) rum. Initially the VSOP was only available in Mauritius, it is now available in the UK for £24.
Gold of Mauritius quite a grandiose title and one which certainly sets this rum up as one that really needs to impress! Mauritian rum has come to our attention before we have reviewed two Penny Blue expressions from the Medine Distillery.
Gold of Mauritus offers a slightly different take on rum – but lets not say too much at this point.
Penny Blue Mauritian Rum hails from the Medine Distillery in Mauritius. The rum is brought to the UK under the watchful eye of Berry Bros. & Rudd, on of London’s premium importers of wines and spirits.
In the past there have been 4 editions of the Penny Blue. This edition is the first Single Cask rum to be released in the UK. (I understand some Single Cask editions have been available in Mauritius)
Mauritian Rum is a new one on me. I have in the past tried Pink Pigeon Spiced Rum. Penny Blue hails from the same distillery as Pink Pigeon – The Medine Distillery. However, Penny Blue promises an altogether more sophisticated and grown up experience.
Regulars readers of the blog may be familiar with the press release I placed on the site a couple of weeks back. By way of thanks for promoting this venture (which is done in conjunction with the wonderfull Berry Bros and Rudd) I was sent a sample of the 4th batch of this Single Estate Mauritian Rum.
The Indian Ocean Company and Berry Bros. & Rudd Spirits are delighted to announce the release of the fourth batch of Penny Blue XO Rum.
Named after the world’s rarest stamp, Penny Blue is distilled at Medine, the oldest operational distillery on Mauritius, dating back to 1926. The estate is situated a few metres from the sea on the west of the island, near Bambou.
