Banks are probably best known for their 5 and 7 Island Blends. In July 2015 Banks Rums were bought out by Bacardi. What plans Bacardi have for Banks Rum is anyones guess. So far no changes have taken place
This Banks Guyana rum is part of their Limited Edition Connoisseurs Cut range. It should not be confused with the rums from Banks DIH (Demerara Ice House) from Guyana who bottle their own range of rums – XM.
Rum-Bar Gold is a barrel aged Jamaican Rum from the Worthy Park Estate. The Estate has been involved in Sugar Production since 1720.
However, due to events described in this interview, I conducted with Alexander Kong they have been absent from the Rum Market until fairly recently.
Back in 2004/5 they set about building a new state of the art distillery in order to begin producing rum again. In 2007 they introduced their White Overproof to the domestic market and have now added a Gold rum and a Rum Cream to their portfolio. In order to help pay for the state of the art distillery Worthy Park have also sold “bulk” rum to other bottlers.
In 1920, when prohibition began, Captain Bill McCoy made a name for himself as America’s first “Rum Runner”. He always delivered the finest quality rum which became known around the world as “The Real McCoy”.
I’ve no idea how true this is. I’ve every confidence if I trawl the internet I will find various different stories about the origins of the term “The Real McCoy”. In the UK a popular crisp brand are term the “Real McCoy’s”.
Plantation Rum, as well as offering their more usual fair have now introduced a Single Cask Collection. I was quite surprised to see a Guatemala XO as part of this collection. This is because recently Plantation stopped producing a sole Guatemalan Anejo and had begun producing a mixed Guatemala/Belize blend.
Penny Blue Mauritian Rum hails from the Medine Distillery in Mauritius. The rum is brought to the UK under the watchful eye of Berry Bros. & Rudd, on of London’s premium importers of wines and spirits.
In the past there have been 4 editions of the Penny Blue. This edition is the first Single Cask rum to be released in the UK. (I understand some Single Cask editions have been available in Mauritius)
Silver Seal Whisky Company are independent bottlers of Whisky and to a lesser extent rums. They hail from Scotland (at least this is where the rum is bottled) and their rums and whiskies are largely available online from Whisky Antique and Rhum Excellence. Italian and French websites. They aren’t readily available in the UK. Which is just typical of the ever confusing rum world.
Offerings from Foursquare Distillery this year have been a little like buses. You wait ages then two come along at once!
We’ve really been lucky in the UK this summer. Seeing a limited edition Foursquare Port Cask Finish and at long last, this mythical beast Doorly’s 12 Year Old.
