Santiago de Cuba Carta Blanca

Santiago de Cuba Carta Blanca rum review by the fat rum pirateSantiago de Cuba is a Cuban rum brand named after the city of Santiago.  A green mountain range named “Sierra Maestra”, the golden sun and the Caribbean Sea characterise the landscape around the city of Santiago.  The landscape can be found in the brands logo.

The Cuban rum distilleries came into existence in the middle of the 19th century. One of the largest distilleries is located in Santiago de Cuba.  The secrets of producing rum are passed on from generation to generation through the “Maestros Roneros”. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum Aged 15 Years by Velier

Caroni Aged 15 Years Rum Review by the fat rum pirateCaroni Aged 15 Years is the older brother of the Aged 12 Years I reviewed earlier.  Both bottlings by Velier standards are relatively inexpensive.

Both rums are example of the “heavy” style of Caroni/Trinidad rum.  Angostura do not produce “heavy” style rum under their own banner. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Iceberg Gold Rum

imageIceberg is a rum which hails from Canada.  Well the brand does anyway, unsurprisingly the actual rum in the bottle is not Canadian.

It is in fact a Demerara rum which is blended with “12,000 year old Iceberg water”.  Yeah okay anything you say!  It is bottled by the Canadian Iceberg Vodka Company.  It has made its way into my home here in the UK via Vikingstad in Norway where AST import it from Canada. This is the Flor de Cana 5 – Anejo Clasico.

The increase in decent rum on our supermarket shelves gave me an easy opportunity to pick up this gold rum from their line up. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

El Dorado Rare Collection – Versailles 2002

El Dorado Versailles Rare Collection rum review by the fat rum pirateEariler this year Demerara Distillers Limited announced some new rums in their El Dorado range.  Limited edition releases of rums from single stills. This one is from the Versailles (VSG) still.

It seems that Demerara Distillers have set out a very different direction for their US and European bottlings.  Last year the US were treated to a range of wine finished expressions of their flagship 15 Year Old rum.  The European market was treated instead to three Rare Collection rums.  This Versailles 2002 is one of them. The World of Independent Bottlings

imageThe rum world is a confusing one.  When you first get into rum or begin a “Rum Journey” as many say, the rum world is very confusing.

After trying a few different styles/brands you’ll start digging around stores and the  Internet for new experiences. You will begin noticing strange bottlings by companies that seem to go beyond the usual brand structures. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Ron Barceló Anejo

Ron Barcelo Anejo rum review by the fat rum pirateBarceló are one of the “big three” Dominican rum producers along with Bermudez and Brugal.

While Brugal have made some impact in the UK – their Anejo is available in a couple of supermarkets now.  Bermudez and Barceló continue to be very popular in Spain but have made little inroad into the UK market. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
