Firstly many apologies for taking so long to finally write this piece. Links to the other parts of this article, will appear at the bottom of the screen. It has taken some prodding (thanks Lance) and some real thought, to finally complete this series of articles. Yes, two years is far too long to wait for this and I apologise. I hate leaving things unfinished. So I finally thought f*ck it I’ll just write what I think and see what happens. God knows I have done it plenty of times before. I’ll also apologise in case there is any repetition from previous articles. I do get carried away sometimes. So here goes…..

Phraya Deep Matured Gold Rum. This is a rum from Thailand. My previous experiences with Thai rum have been largely underwhelming, with the so-so SangSom and the frankly strange concoction that was Mekhong. Technically Mekhong isn’t really a rum – it is often sold as Thai Whisky. Weird stuff nonetheless no matter what you call it.

The bottler, The Duchess have made great waves with their attention to detail, both in terms of the design and presentation of their rums but more importantly due to the high standard of their offerings.

It was quite a surprise when compiling the contenders for Rum of the Year, to see which rums didn’t make the grade.
As I only pick one rum from the 100 or so I review in a year, it comes down to the very best of the best. So a lot of excellent (and highly recommended) rums fall by the wayside.

Obviously, this is the one award that every self respecting rum producer wants to win. In a world where many Rum Awards are determined by paid entries and golden handshakes this is one award no producer can influence. And no amount of nasty emails or invites to distilleries will spoil that……..
