Kill Devil Jamaica Hampden Distillery Aged 10 Years – The Whisky Barrel Exclusive

Kill Devil Jamaica Hampden Distillery Aged 10 Years Rum Review by the fat rum pirate The Whisky BarrelKill Devil Jamaica Hampden Distillery Aged 10 Years – The Whisky Barrel Exclusive. An exclusive bottling sees one of Scotland’s younger rum bottlers, team up with a relatively youthful Scottish retailer in the shape of The Whisky Barrel.

The Whisky Barrel have been earning a great reputation over the past few years. Focusing and stocking Independent bottlings of both whisky and rum. Obviously my attention has always focused on the rum. They heavily feature two of my favourite UK based Indie bottlers. Bristol Classic Rum and Hunter Laing’s Kill Devil range. Compagnie des Indes Caraibes

Compagnie Des Indes Caraibes Blend Rum Review by the fat rum pirateCompagnie des Indes Caraibes. The French Independent bottler Compagnie des Indes have been making great strides over the past couple of years. They have expanded from releasing rums at 43-46% ABV and are now moving into Cask Strength bottlings.

A fair few of these have went to the Danish market and have been pretty difficult to come by in the UK and mainland Europe. Generous samples from enthusiasts in Denmark have helped me try some of these rums. Fortunately Compagnie des Indes Caraibes is/was a little easier to access. Skotlander Handcrafted Rum V 2,200 SØMIL

Skotlander Rum V 2,200 SØMIL Rum review by the fat rum pirateSkotlander Handcrafted Rum V 2,200 SØMIL. No your eyes do deceive you! I’m not reviewing the same rum as before. This is the 2,200 SØMIL release not the 1,400 SØMIL rum I reviewed last year. A SØMIL is a Nautical mile and this rum has been aged at sea.

Skotlander have been making waves (see what I did there) in the Danish rum scene. The rum scene in Denmark is actually pretty good especially in the capital Copenhagen. Famous rum names from Denmark include Johnny Drejer of Drecon.dk (the originator of the Hydrometer Tests), Mads Heitmann of Romhatten.dk, Henrik Kristofferson over at Rum Corner and Rum Festival regular Ingvar Thomsen. Not to mention a number of very enthusiastic Rum drinkers whom whilst not rum bloggers or “figureheads” are contributors in the various online rum forums etc. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Diplomatico Distillery Collection No2 Barbet Rum

Diplomatico Distillery Collection No2 Barbet Rum Review by the fat rum pirateDiplomatico Distillery Collection No2 Barbet Rum. Late in 2017 Diplomatico released two new expressions. These expressiona are designed to highlight the different types of rum that Diplomatico can produce at their distillery.

I do feel these releases have been produced to try and appeal to those who perhaps are more critical of Diplomatico’s sweetened rums – such as the Reserva Exclusiva, Single Vintage releases and their highest priced rum the Ambassador. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Ron Cartavio XO 18 Anos

Ron Cartavio XO Rum Review by the fat rum pirateRon Cartavio XO is the top of the line for this Peruvian rum maker. It is now noted as being an 18 year old rum – it is no longer labelled as a Solera system rum. I reviewed their 12 “Year” Solera rum a while back and found it to be pretty average. Other than that my own experience of Peruvian rum has been with the frankly abominable Ron Millonario XO. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Diplomatico Distillery Collection No1 Batch Kettle Rum

DIplomatico Distillery Collection No1 Batch Kettle Rum Review by the fat rum pirateDiplomatico Distillery Collection No1 Batch Kettle Rum. Diplomatico were a few years ago synonymous with what was seen as good “sipping” rum. They are still highly regarded in some circles and their Reserva Exclusive still regularly features in top ten rum lists.

Unfortunately much like Zacapa their over reliance on additives and the publicising of such tests has clipped the wings of the brand – but only very slightly. The brand to their credit are beginning to give details of added sugar on their bottles. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
