Elements Eight Fine Aged Platinum

Elements Eight Platinum rum review by the fat rum pirateElements Eight Fine Aged Platinum rum hails from the island of St Lucia.  Elements Eight is the brainchild of Carl Stephenson (whose past employers include Wray and Nephew).  Their rums have won numerous awards since they were launched back in 2006.

Platinum is a premium white rum.  Unlike many white rums it is actually an aged rum.  Aged up to 4 years in ex-Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels.  It is then gently filtered to remove any colour. Leaving a very clean, crisp spirit behind.  Unlike many rums bottled by UK companies this has been entirely tropically aged. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Ultimatum Rum Fiji Secret Distillery Aged 12 Years

Ultimatum Fiji Secret Distillery rum review by the fat rum pirateUltimatum Rum Fiji Secret Distillery is not quite as mysterious as it sounds. There is currently only one working commercial distillery on Fiji. So its not really much of a secret.

Rums from Fiji have been popping up all over the place over the past year. Many independent bottlers have been picking up and releasing Fijian rums. The distillery is actually the South Pacific Rum distillery. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Skotlander Handcrafted Rum V 1,400 SØMIL

Skotlander Handcrafted Rum V 1,400 SØMILSkotlander Handcrafted Rum V 1,400 SØMIL is perhaps the most bizarrely named rum I have reviewed so far.  The strange name owes mostly to the way it has been aged.  When translated into English and the story is told it does make a lot more sense.  Even if the way the rum has been aged is a little baffling……. Elements Eight Republica

ElementsElements Eight Republica rum review by the fat rum pirat Eight Republica sees the UK based rum company move away from the island of St Lucia for the first time.  Since launching in 2006 Elements Eight have focused on a range of rums solely from St Lucia Distillers. Following a re-launch and re-design of the rums range in 2016 Carl Stephenson, the founder of Elements Eight began thinking about releasing rums from other countries/regions. Plantation O.F.T.D. – Old Fashioned Traditional Dark

Plantation O.F.T.D. OFTD Rum review by the fat rum piratePlantation O.F.T.D is another trip into history from the French producers.  Following on from the Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple rum, O.F.T.D. which stands for Old Fashioned Traditional Dark is another attempt at recapturing the rum glories of old.

The rum seems to be a replcacement for the brands older Original Dark Overproof rum.  This means that both the Overproof and standard proof Original Dark rum have been given an overhaul.  Both rums were originally made up of rum from Trinidad.  I personally didn’t care much for either and went as far as suggesting the standard Original Dark was no better than supermarket rum such as Tesco’s Dark Rum – which is also a Trinidad “blend”.  As a result neither rum scored particularly highly. Berrys’ St Lucia Rum Aged 14 Years

Berrys Bros and Rudd St Lucia Rum Aged 14 Years Rum review by the fat rum pirateBerrys’ or Berrys’ Bros and Rudd are an Independent bottler. We have featured their offerings on this site on a few occasions already.  This is the second Berrys’ St Lucia rum to be reviewed.

They bottle a wide variety of rums from familiar rum producing islands and nations.  Ocassionally they dip their toe in less well established islands, such as Fiji.  Here we have a rum from an island which is growing its reputation and becoming well respected in the rum world. 1931 St Lucia Distillers – 5th Edition

1931 ST LUCIA DISTILLERS 5TH EDITION 84 RUM REVIEW BY THE FAT RUM PIRATEThe fifth edition of the 1931 series which is now celebrating 84 years of Rum Making on the island of St Lucia.  Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the UK will see any of this stock as they have struggled to make enough to satisfy demand particularly in US.  I’m not going to give this issue anymore time – suffice to say this is the second rum producer in the past few months to have disappointed me by not making their product available in the UK.  I’m no longer interested in the reasons or excuses.
