Introduction

Holmes Cay Fiji Single Origin Blend. We’re back with another release from Eric Kaye’s US based independent bottling label, Holmes Cay. While they’ve made a name for themselves over the past few years largely through Cask Strength Single Barrel releases, this particular bottling takes things in a different direction.

Instead of a Single Cask, this is a Single Blended Rum. Meaning it’s a mix of both Pot and Column still rums originating from the same distillery. In this case, that distillery is South Pacific Distillery (SPD) located in Lautoka, Fiji.

Interestingly, this expression was put together in a rather unique collaboration. Holmes Cay teamed up with John and Will from the Rumcast podcast, alongside the blending experts at E&A Scheer in Amsterdam, to pinpoint the exact profile they wanted to bottle.

Fijian rum has gained a fair amount of traction in enthusiast circles in recent years. The volcanic soil and local molasses produce a very distinctive, often slightly industrial and funky distillate.

However, we typically see it presented on the European market as long aged, independently bottled single casks that are often reliant on the barrel ageing and some of the “funk” is often gone.

This release completely dials back the oak and takes a much younger approach. We are looking at a blend of young Tropically aged Column Still rum. Which spent roughly two years resting in ex-Bourbon casks. This has been married with entirely Unaged Pot Still spirit. The primary goal here is to give us a much closer look at the raw, funky distillate of the Fijian stills.

Bottled at a very approachable 46% ABV, it’s deliberately positioned as a versatile, cocktail friendly rum that can also hold its own neat, rather than aiming to be a Cask Strength monster. As this is a US Import you will find it comes in a 75cl bottle. So a little extra bang for your buck. A bonus double.

Tasting

In the glass, Holmes Cay Fiji Single Origin Blend is a very light Straw colour, picking up just a faint hint of Gold.

On the nose, the initial aromas bring a heavy dose of freshly cut Grass/Straw, zesty Citrus Peel and White Pepper. It’s very bright and incredibly fresh.

Underneath that initial wave, there is a very pleasant, slightly sweet aroma of Toffee, alongside some faint hints of Green Banana and Raisins.

The oak is definitely taking a back seat here, allowing the ester profile and funkiness of the base spirit to shine through. You get Vanilla and Dry Straw, rounded off with a touch of Clove. At 46% ABV, the alcohol is present and carries the aromas well. It lets you know it means business this is no shrinking violet. All in all, the nose is warm, funk driven and well balanced for a rum with such youthful components. That said its certainly not a sweet and easy going nose!

On the initial sip, Holmes Cay Fiji Single Origin Blend is pretty meaty and very funky. The 46% ABV gives it a very solid backbone thats for sure. The Pot Still element brings a noticeably oily, coating texture to the mouthfeel that gives it some real weight on the palate. It’s pretty intense and carries a lot of flavour.

Initially I am hit by a Menthol like note and some Pineapple and rotting Banana. Beneath this there is a hit of Honey, which is quickly tempered by a drier, more grassy and herbaceous profile. As it develops on the mid-palate, you get prominent notes of clove, and a distinct hit of Black Pepper.

As the spice settles, there is a fruitiness starting to come through. It’s not heavy, dark fruits, but rather fresh Papaya, Green Apple, and lighter Tropical fruits.

The youthful Pot still element provides a very vibrant texture that will really appeal to those who enjoy a funkier, less oak dominated experience.

This is a real mix of Jamaican Funk and Grassy Agricole. Also that herbal note that you get from Saint Lucia Distillers as well.

I’ve had Fijian rums up to 8 years old that have been a lot more “feral” than this. I’ve alwas found the single digit Fijian rums to be a bit of a challenge to be honest. This however is different and is certainly an easier sip.

Holmes Cay Fiji Single Origin Blend finish is reasonably long lasting, warming, and spicy. You are left with a lingering hit of Grassy Straw, Black pepper and Clove. A very satisfying, vibrant ending. It also leaves a slightly Fruity, Grassy, and almost saline Mineral note on the palate right at the very end.

It is also worth noting how well this performs in mixed drinks. Which was part of the whole ethos behind it!

Given the ABV and the blend of unaged Pot Still and lightly aged Column, it feels custom built for a Daiquiri. The grassy, funky notes punch right through the Lime and Sugar, making for an incredibly crisp and very characterful cocktail.

Its not really a mixer of Coke though as its a bit to Agricole adjacent to really work for me. It just gives it a funny taste.

Verdict

Holmes Cay Fiji Single Origin Blend has a more raw, authentic vibe that showcases exactly what this distillery’s Pot and Column stills can achieve before the barrel takes over.

It’s a challenging, complex, and thoroughly enjoyable tot on its own. Proably more of a “mood” rum taken neat. You won’t always appreciate it or be in the mood for such a rum.

At £55 a bottle, it might seem a touch pricey for a younger blend but when you factor in the quality of the distillate, the blending expertise of Scheer and the fact that it is a fairly limited Independent bottling imported from the US of A, it offers solid value for money.

Holmes Cay has presented this exactly as it should be. It provides a distinctly different, fresher profile compared to standard older releases from the region, leaning heavily into Grass, Pepper, and lighter fruit notes.

If you want to experience what a traditional Fijian rum tastes like when the distillate does the talking rather than the cask, this delivers exactly what it promises on the label.

Final Thoughts A vibrant, youthful Fijian Single Blended rum that genuinely showcases the true, funk driven profile of South Pacific Distilleries. Surprisingly good neat and an absolute powerhouse in a cocktail.
