The site is now over 3 years old. The site as it appears now was “re-booted” back in December 2014. Which was pretty much when it began getting a meaningful amount of views. We’ve now reviewed over 300 different rums, with many more in the pipeline. Out of curiosity I thought I would see how many rums I have given the 5 star treatment. The search was quite interesting. I was quite surprised by some of the omissions – only garnering 4 or 4.5 stars. I’ve also tried not to flood the list with rums from the same distillery to keep a bit of variety.

Flor de Cana – Sugar Cane Flower in English are a Nicaraguan rum producer. Hailing from the wonderfully named Chichigalpa the distillery and San Antonio Sugar Mill have been housed theres since 1890.
I have reviewed and tasted a few of the Flor de Cana line up – with contrasting results. The Dry White 4 and the Gran Reserva 7 I both enjoyed. The Gran Anejo 5 and the Centenario 12 less so. The Centenario 12 was perhaps the most disappoiinting. Insipid, muted and just very dull.
Ron Vigia are a Cuban rum brand. After that it all gets a bit more complicated. Once again trying to research a Cuban Rum is difficult – to be honest at times it gets pretty annoying. Nevertheless I’ve done my best and tried to patch together the limited information I can get about this Communist Export.
Trois Rivieres Cuvee de Moulin – Rough translation Three Rivers Blend of the Mill. Is a limited edtion expression from Martinique producer Trois Rivieres.
It is a blend of rums carefully matured for over three years in ex Cognac and Bourbon casks. Marketed as a “rhum vieux agricole” – aged. The producer advises it can be sipped neat or mixed in cocktails.
Mezan Trinidad 1999 is a rum from the iconic and now sadly closed Caroni Distillery.
The Caroni Distillery was founded in 1918 and it was a Single Estate Distillery with its own sugar refinery. Renowed for its heavy “Navy” style rums it sadly closed in 2002.
Velier have in recent years “resurrected” the Caroni making it into a brand years after it last produced any rum! By buying numerous barrels from the the defunct distillery Luca Gargano and Co. have given Caroni Rum a reputation which is now reaching mythical status.
Until just a few weeks ago I had never visited Bristol before. The first time I visited was for a training course with work. The second time was to visit the Bristol Rum Festival. Needless to say the visits were quite different……
Bristol Rum Festival was held on the 9th September 2017 at The Paintworks event space. The event was part of the UK Rum Festivals series of events which have taken on the cities of Cardiff, Exeter and finally Bristol. Giving the South West of England a taste of the Caribbean. The events were organised by Rum and Tiki Enthusiast and Rum Importer Jon Rees. We interviewed Jon earlier in the year.
Ron Caney Anejo Centuria – another Cuban rum I picked up in Spain. Which seems to be the place to go if you want lower to mid level Cuban rum. At a very reasonable price.
As with a lot of Cuban rums information is a little sketchy. Some information online seem to suggest this a blend of rums aged between 5 and 9 years. Other resources denote it being a 7 year old rum.
