Mezan Trinidad 1999

Mezan Trinidad 1999 Rum Review by the fat rum pirateMezan Trinidad 1999 is a rum from the iconic and now sadly closed Caroni Distillery.

The Caroni Distillery was founded in 1918 and it was a Single Estate Distillery with its own sugar refinery.  Renowed for its heavy “Navy” style rums it sadly closed in 2002.

Velier have in recent years “resurrected” the Caroni making it into a brand years after it last produced any rum!  By buying numerous barrels from the the defunct distillery Luca Gargano and Co. have given Caroni Rum a reputation which is now reaching mythical status. UK Rum Festivals – Bristol Rum Festival Weekend

Bristol Rum Festival UK Rum Festivals Review by the fat rum pirateUntil just a few weeks ago I had never visited Bristol before.  The first time I visited was for a training course with work.  The second time was to visit the Bristol Rum Festival. Needless to say the visits were quite different……

Bristol Rum Festival was held on the 9th September 2017 at The Paintworks event space.  The event was part of the UK Rum Festivals series of events which have taken on the cities of Cardiff, Exeter and finally Bristol.  Giving the South West of England a taste of the Caribbean. The events were organised by Rum and Tiki Enthusiast and Rum Importer Jon Rees.  We interviewed Jon earlier in the year. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Ron Caney Anejo Centuria

Ron Caney Anejo Centuria Rum Review by the fat rum pirateRon Caney Anejo Centuria – another Cuban rum I picked up in Spain.  Which seems to be the place to go if you want lower to mid level Cuban rum.  At a very reasonable price.

As with a lot of Cuban rums information is a little sketchy.  Some information online seem to suggest this a blend of rums aged between 5 and 9 years. Other resources denote it being a 7 year old rum. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Watson’s Trawler Rum

Watson's Trawler Rum review by the fat rum pirateWatson’s Trawler Rum is another dark navy style rum from “up north”.  Scotland has a real tradition when it comes to rum.  Many famous Independent bottlers such as obvious ones like Cadenhead’s and Duncan Taylor age their rums in Scotland.  Surprisingly for some, Italian bottlers such as Samaroli and Silver Seal also age their rums up there. Habitation Velier Last Ward 2007

Habitation Velier Last Ward 2007 Rum review by the fat rum pirateHabitation Velier Last Ward 2007 is an intriguingly named rum in the popular series of Pure rums from Luca Gargano and co.  Last Ward 2007 represents the Ward family.  Who for over 100 years owned and ran the Mount Gay rum distillery in St Lucy, Barbados.

As with all Habitation Velier releases you get a lot of information on the bottle and the study card sleeve which houses the rum.  Presented in the now distinctive flask style opaque bottles this rum from the Mount Gay Rum Refinery is given a baby blue colour scheme.  Velier usually give individual distilleries/stills a colour scheme which they carry through for all releases.  This was most commonly used in their old Demerara offerings. The Infamous Rum No. 01

Infamous Rum No1 Rum Review by the fat rum pirateThe Infamous Rum No. 01 is a Spiced Rum which hails from Belgium.  This Spiced Rum has been created by Infamous Designs and Concepts who bill themselves as Private Label Creators.  As to be excepted from such an operation they have a website.

The brand unsurprisingly offers a very slick, modern appearance. Having said that they haven’t went down the story-telling route of other Spiced Rum brands.  They are actually giving more information on the actual rum than 99% of Spiced Rum Brands.  The Infamous Rum No. 01 is currently only available in limited quantities, mostly in Belgium and the Netherlands.  They are looking to upscale production to keep up with demand. Kill Devil Guyana Aged 12 Years

Kill Devil Guyana 12 Year Old Rum Review by the Fat Rum PirateKill Devil Guyana Aged 12 Years.  Kill Devil are a range of rums bottled by Whisky bottler Hunter-Laing.  I’ve covered them quite extensively on the site so far.

They are now bottling rums at Cask Strength.  The Kill Devil range now have rums with Red labels like these – to demonstrate Cask Strength.  Everything else presentation wise is exactly as before. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
