Habitation Velier Last Ward 2007

Habitation Velier Last Ward 2007 Rum review by the fat rum pirateHabitation Velier Last Ward 2007 is an intriguingly named rum in the popular series of Pure rums from Luca Gargano and co.  Last Ward 2007 represents the Ward family.  Who for over 100 years owned and ran the Mount Gay rum distillery in St Lucy, Barbados.

As with all Habitation Velier releases you get a lot of information on the bottle and the study card sleeve which houses the rum.  Presented in the now distinctive flask style opaque bottles this rum from the Mount Gay Rum Refinery is given a baby blue colour scheme.  Velier usually give individual distilleries/stills a colour scheme which they carry through for all releases.  This was most commonly used in their old Demerara offerings. Mount Gilboa Triple Distilled Barbados Pot Still Rum

Mount Gilboa Barbados Pot Still Rum Review by the fat rum pirateMount Gilboa is a triple distilled Pot Still rum.  This in itself is fairly unusual, I think.  I’ve heard little about multiple distillation in rum, unlike Vodka for example.  That’s not to say it doesn’t occur just that is rarely mentioned.  Mount Gilboa is a product of Barbados and from the name and product design you could be mistaken into thinking you are getting a cheaper Mount Gay product or a copycat. Mount Gay Origin Series

Mount Gay Origin SeriesLike many of the more traditional Caribbean Distilleries Mount Gay do not release new expressions very often.  The recent Black Barrel was the first new release in the producers portfolio in at least a decade, if memory serves me right.  Limited Edition releases are not there thing either. The latest expression of Mount Gay’s time-honoured tradition comes in the form of a limited-edition release of small-batch rums, presenting enthusiasts with two distinct experiences – Virgin Cask and Charred Cask. Created by Master Blender Allen Smith, the first volume of the Origin Series will see production of 30 barrels of each cask.  Sadly for us here at thefatrumpirate.com the rum will be released in only two markets Barbados and the United States. Further disappointment is compounded by the fact that it will be a one-off release.  Still I fully expect my friends over at the Whisky Exchange to obtain a couple of bottles – fingers crossed. Smith said the last time the distillery had produced a limited-edition rum was in celebration of the company’s 300th anniversary in 2003. “The introduction of the Origin Series comes at the perfect time as Mount Gay prepares to celebrate its 312th anniversary later this month. While remaining true to Mount Gay’s legacy, we are offering enthusiasts Volume One of the Origin Series is presented as two 375ml bottles as pictured above “The rum that is finished in the lightly toasted virgin French oak casks results in a delicate, medium-bodied spirit with notes of vanilla, citrus and sweet caramel, while the rich and amber-hued charred Cask is a mature blend of copper pot and column distillates which receives a long, slow finish in casks of deeply charred American Oak,” added Smith. Raphael Grisoni, Managing Director of Mount Gay Distilleries Limited, said the Origin Series reaffirmed the company’s commitment to export and innovation, noting that 500 cases would also be earmarked for local distribution exclusively via the Mount Gay Visitor Centre. “North America remains our number one export market. We enjoy strong consumer relationships in that region and we will continue to conquer new ground for rum in the international spirits market,” he said. While the limited-edition Series will be released in the United States later this year, a select number of Barbadians will have the opportunity to win the rare spirit later this month when Mount Gay launches celebrations for its 312th anniversary. Between February 20th and 27th, consumers will be invited to enter an island-wide sweepstake whereby the local distiller will each day reward one lucky person with Volume One of the Origin Series. Mount Gay Extra Old Reserve Cask Rum

Mount Gay Extra OldMount Gay Extra Old or XO as they seem to have re-branded it.  For those in the know Mount Gay Extra Old is often known as MGXO.  The XO notation on the Mount Gay is pretty standard across the rum and spirits industry to denote an aged spirit (without actually noting how old it is!).

As the Mount Gay Distillery is the oldest official distillery in the world established 1703 as the label denotes, I don’t think we need to worry too much about the heritage and authenticity of the contents of this Extra Old rum. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
