Kirk and Sweeney Dominican Rum 12 Year. Kirk and Sweeney is an American rum “brand”. As well as having this rum their range also consists of a 18 year and 23 year old rum.
The company behind Kirk and Sweeney are 3 Badge Beverage Company from California. Kirk and Sweeney is named after a wooden schooner. This schooner, Kirk and Sweeney, was a rum running vessel which brought rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast Coast during Prohibition. The ship was captured off the coast of New York in 1924. An enormous cargo of rum was found aboard.
Atlantico Gran Reserva. Atlantico are a rum brand that hail from the Dominican Republic. In 2017 Atlantico had a complete re-brand of their rum range.
This particular bottling was the Private Cask – it is now renamed as the Gran Reserva. Other rums in the range are the White – Platino and the mid range rum the Reserva.
Cane Island Dominican Republic Aged 5 Years is the final review in the recently released trio of rums from Cane Island.
As mentioned previously Cane Island are a new Independent bottler – at the moment their rums are only available from shops in Amsterdam. Luckily most of these stores deliver to the UK so I didn’t miss out on trying these rums.
Barceló are on of the big three named rum producers of the Dominican Republic. I say named because Oliver & Oliver another big Dominican rum player produce a variety of rums under various different guises.
In 1929 Spaniard Julián Barceló arrived in Santo Domingo and founded Barceló & Co. In 1974, Don Julián Barceló handed over the reins to his nephew Miguel Barceló and in 1980 Ron Barceló Imperial was born.
Barceló are one of the “big three” Dominican rum producers along with Bermudez and Brugal.
While Brugal have made some impact in the UK – their Anejo is available in a couple of supermarkets now. Bermudez and Barceló continue to be very popular in Spain but have made little inroad into the UK market.
