Worst Ten Rums…….So Far

Worst Rum So Far Article by the fat rum pirateWorst Ten Rums is probably an article a lot of you have been expecting for a while. In fairness it has been in the pipeline a long time.  With around 300 reviews in the bag, I thought it might be useful to look back and see which rums I truly hated.

You see a lot of the rum I have reviewed I have found to be pretty mediocre.  Maybe I could compile a list of the Ten most boring rums as well?  When all is said and done, not that many rums have truly offended me or surprised me.  Often I’ve bought cheaply and pretty much got what I paid for. Top Ten Rums……So Far

The site is now over 3 years old.  The site as it appears now was “re-booted” back in December 2014. Which was pretty much when it began getting a meaningful amount of views. We’ve now reviewed over 300 different rums, with many more in the pipeline.  Out of curiosity I thought I would see how many rums I have given the 5 star treatment. The search was quite interesting.  I was quite surprised by some of the omissions – only garnering 4 or 4.5 stars.  I’ve also tried not to flood the list with rums from the same distillery to keep a bit of variety. UK Rum Festivals – Bristol Rum Festival Weekend

Bristol Rum Festival UK Rum Festivals Review by the fat rum pirateUntil just a few weeks ago I had never visited Bristol before.  The first time I visited was for a training course with work.  The second time was to visit the Bristol Rum Festival. Needless to say the visits were quite different……

Bristol Rum Festival was held on the 9th September 2017 at The Paintworks event space.  The event was part of the UK Rum Festivals series of events which have taken on the cities of Cardiff, Exeter and finally Bristol.  Giving the South West of England a taste of the Caribbean. The events were organised by Rum and Tiki Enthusiast and Rum Importer Jon Rees.  We interviewed Jon earlier in the year. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Gargano Rum Classification – Can it Change the Rum World?

Gargano Rum Classification Article by the fat rum pirate Hampden StillIntroduction

I’ve been asked a few times recently why I’m not supporting the Gargano Rum Classification.  By support, I assume people are wondering why I haven’t featured the classification on the site? Or why I haven’t adopted it in my reviews?

Fact is, I have for a long time tried whenever possible to find out how the rum in my bottle has been produced.  Which is exactly what the Gargano Rum Classification involves. Though I haven’t “come out” in favour quite as enthusiastically or as quickly as some, the more information disclosed the better in my book. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating

Rum is Fun but it isn’t Dumb….not anymore

Rum is FunRum is Fun so the mantra goes.  I once asked Dave Broom if rum needed to lose its “fun” tag to improve its image.  Dave’s overwhelming response was a very definite no.  He has even mentioned me posing the question in his latest rum book The Manual.

Dave believes that rum should keep its “fun” tag as it makes people smile when they think of it.  He also felt that when Scotch Whisky forgot about “fun” the industry entered two decades of decline. Read more to see the fatrumpirate rating
